$6.89 A South African girl, named Sarafina, lives with her aunt and uncle in Soweto where she attends school. Her mother works as a maid in a white household in Johannesburg, and the two rarely see each other. Sarafina battles her feelings of abandonment and disappointment with passionate hero-worship of both imprisoned political activist Nelson Mandela and her rebellious history teacher, Mary Masombuka. Mary encourages the children to be proud of who they are, and aware of the political forces that rule their lives. She even helps the pupils put on a play expressing their desire for the eventual release of Mandela.
But when one of Sarafina's classmates gets involved in an arson attack, the police crack down hard on the students. As a result, the children boycott white-owned stores in the neighborhood, and tensions begin to rise. Even as Mary reassures Sarafina that she dreams of a free and peaceful South Africa, violence erupts throughout the township. A riot ensues when policemen fire at some of the children, and Sarafina faces years of imprisonment and torture for her role in ...

$7.09 Focusing on the failed relationship of a thirtysomething couple, French director Francois Ozon (SWIMMING POOL, UNDER THE SAND) organizes this film into five chapters they shared together. In backwards chronology, the first chapter of Marion (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi) and Gilles's (Stephane Freiss) story has them signing divorce papers, and the last chapter shows the first sparks of romance between them years earlier. A master of controlling his audience's emotions, Ozon elicits vast sympathies for each character, making their relationship--and especially, the problems they cannot live with--more painful with each new detail revealed about Marion and Gilles. We see them alone in their darkest moments as they sit staring into space, smouldering with bitter helplessness at how the relationship is irreversibly wrong. And we see them love, and spar, and hurt each other in ways that seem unimaginable until the full picture is painted. It is this hurt that makes Marion, with her big, defeated, glassy blue eyes, unable to look at Gilles as they review the terms of their divorce. And it is this same hurt that culminates in Gilles raping Marion in a hotel room, brokenhearted and enraged at losing her love. How did this twosome wind up in such a miserable state? The remaining chapters--which pull viewers backwards by their heartstrings--reveal many ...

$8.35 Will Smith is a father struggling to take care of his young son in this touching tale based on a true story. In San Francisco circa 1981, Chris Gardner's (Smith) luck has run out. A bad business investment, a bevy of parking tickets, and back taxes in addition to rent, childcare, and groceries keep him constantly scrambling for cash. Chris thinks his luck is changing when he is accepted into a highly competitive internship program at a brokerage firm. But the internship is unpaid and soon, despite his best efforts, Chris and his five-year old son, Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith--Will Smith's real life son), find themselves homeless. Chris might spend his days training to invest and make millions, but he and Christopher spend their nights in shelters and public transportation stations.
Gardner's story is a testament not only to the love between a father and son, but also to the strength of the human spirit. Will Smith turns in a fine, nuanced performance as a man determined to protect his son and make a life for himself and his family. Jaden Smith is an adorable scene-stealer as young Christopher. The real-life father and son pairing translates well onto the big screen; the two have terrific natural chemistry. Their affection for each other is apparent, even as they weather the tough times. This is Italian director Gabriele Muccino's (THE LAST KISS, REMEMBER ME MY LOVE) first film in the English language. Thandie Newton also stars as Christopher's overworked and defeated mother in this tearjerker which was inspired ...
