On a June weekend in 1967, at the height of the Summer of Love, this festival ushered in a new era of rock and roll, and launched the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, as well as showcasing veteran performers including Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & The Papas, The Who, and Ravi Sahnkar. Filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker captured it all. Extras include scrapbook, high-definition digital transfer supervised by Pennebaker, commentaries, video interview, original theatrical trailer, radio spots, and more. This documentary film from director D.A. Pennebaker features live performances, behind-the-scenes and audience footage, and other selections from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, which was considered to be the forerunner to Woodstock. The concert was organized by Alan Pariser, an L.A. rock scenester; John Philips, singer for the Mamas and the Papas; and Lou Adler, a record producer; along with a board of musicians such as Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Donovan, Brian Wilson, and Smokey Robinson. Performers include Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Jefferson Airplane, and The Byrds, among many others. The Monterey International Pop Festival -- the first of the big rock festivals -- took place over three days, January 16 to January 18, 1967, and drew 50,000 people. Tickets for Monterey ranged in price from $3.50 to $6.

In August 2001, the film was rereleased in a new 35 mm print and received a theatrical run at The Screening Room in New York City. Monterey Pop Reviews: "[N]ot only the first major rock festival movie but one of the most memorable."

$12.69 Woody Allen leads a revolution in a small Latin American dictatorship in this hysterical comedy that parodies everything from the American media and political activism to the CIA and the judicial system. Allen plays Fielding Mellish, a nebbish unwilling to commit to anything--until he meets Nancy, played by Louise Lasser. Mellish soon finds himself fighting with guerrilla forces in the small third world country of San Marcos, ...

Monterey Pop review
$7.89 MESSAGE TO LOVE: THE ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL is a vital historical document that depicts a climate in which the boundless hippie optimism of the 1960s was about to be chewed up and spit out by the materialistic capitalism of the 1970s. Poorly organized by three upstart concert promoters, the festival brought together 600,000 music fans for a star-studded five-day event. Unfortunately, not many of the festival attendees bothered to purchase tickets, and the resulting dramas kept the concert from becoming the free-and-easy event that people dreamed it would be. While the lineup reads like a who's who of the era's greatest artists--The Who, Free, Taste, Tiny Tim, John Sebastian, Donovan, Ten Years After, The Moody Blues, Kris Kristofferson, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen, ELP, Joan Baez, Jethro Tull, The Doors, and more--the overlying tensions threatened to drown out the music ...

$14.55 In the summer of 1970, a rock festival travelled across Canada by luxury train, stopping in Toronto, Calgary, and Winnipeg. Monterey Pop review
$9.69 The film that Woody Allen has said is his favorite of all that he's made, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO unites the competing tendencies in his work towards realism (be it comic, as in ANNIE HALL, or dramatic, as in INTERIORS) and comedic fantasy (such as SLEEPER or BANANAS). Cecilia (Mia Farrow) lives in New Jersey during the Great Depression, which appropriately describes her mood: she works a dead-end job as a waitress that supports her and her abusive, deadbeat husband ...

$14.99 Jared Leto (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, ALEXANDER) takes us down the rabbit hole and into the mind of John Lennon murderer Mark David Chapman, in the effectively unsettling CHAPTER 27. Inspired by Jack Jones' sensationalist biography of Chapman, LET ME TAKE YOU DOWN, CHAPTER 27 dramatizes three fateful days leading up to the shooting. The year is 1980. Mark David Chapman arrives in wintry New York City, where he quickly assumes the identity of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE protagonist Holden Caulfield, eager to cleanse a world filled with "phonies." Chapman makes his way to the tony Dakota apartment building where Lennon lives, and strikes up a tentative friendship with a sweetly naive groupie named Jude (Lindsay Lohan). Chapman becomes increasingly torn by his avenging ...
