Howard Hawks directs this classic about a jaded American fisherman (Bogart) who risks his life to help a group of French freedom fighters and a sultry young woman (Bacall) with whom he falls in love. The fascinating setting (Vichy-controlled Martinique during the Second World War), the source material (Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel), and a screenplay co-written by a literary master (William Faulkner) all take a backseat to the on- and off-screen romance between the two legends. Help the Free French? Not world-weary gunrunner Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart). But he changes his mind when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?"
That red-hot match is Bogart and 19-year-old first-time film actress Lauren Bacall. Full of intrigue and racy banter (including Bacall's legendary whistling instructions), this thriller excites further interest for what it has and has not. Cannily directed by Howard Hawks and smartly written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman, it doesn't have much similarity to the Ernest Hemingway novel that inspired it. And it strongly resembles Casablanca: French resistance fighters, a piano-playing bluesman (Hoagy Carmichael) and a Martinique bar much like Rick's Cafe Americaine. But first and foremost, it showcases Bogart and Bacall, carrying on with a passion that smolders from the tips of their cigarettes clear through to their souls.

The leads all touch emotional truths: Myrna Loy seems able to express longing, joy, fear and surprise--mostly with her back turned--in a particularly poignant welcome home. The movie never glosses over the reality of altered lives and the inability to communicate the experience of war on the front lines or the home front. A landmark achievement. Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA) directs James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Pat O'Brien in one of the greatest gangster melodramas made during the Hollywood studio era. In 1974, Sam Peckinpah directed BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, a film that is, even for Peckinpah, relentlessly bleak in its portrayal of life. Tellingly, it was one of the last films Peckinpah produced; it was also the fearsome director's personal favorite of the many movies he directed. Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a piano-player who happens upon two bounty hunters who have been dispatched by a Mexican rancher to collect the head of Alfredo Garcia. It seems that Garcia had impregnated the rancher's daughter, who wants his head as indisputable proof that this deviant is dead, and won't be bothering his family again. Penniless and out of luck, Bennie does a little snooping of his own, discovers that his girlfriend knows where the final resting place of Garcia is, and decides to usurp the bounty hunters by severing Garcia's head and collecting the cash for himself. Peckinpah unleashes some ferocious scenes of violence as Bennie attempts to complete his task, while Oates is magnificent as Bennie, who slides into madness as events take a turn for the worse; he even resorts to talking to Garcia's decapitated head, and washing it in the shower.

To Have And Have Not Movie Review The movie that taught everyone to whistle.
One of the world's most famous May/September romances began here. Bogie & Bacall became a couple on the set, and the chemistry is all on the screen. It's also great fun. Think "Casablanca in the Caribbean." Many of the same supporting cast members appear, with Bacall in the Bergman role. Snappy dialogue improves on the Hemingway tale of WWII mystery & intrigue.
