Full Descriptionultimately wins him over -- as does the sexy, seductive Marie, played by Lauren Bacall in her Hollywood debut. A 40-something Humphrey Bogart and a novice named Lauren Bacall might have seemed like an odd pairing on paper, but their chemistry in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT ignites the screen. Howard Hawks directs this classic about a jaded American fisherman (Bogart) who risks his life to help a group of French freedom fighters and a sultry young woman (Bacall) with whom he falls in love. The fascinating setting (Vichy-controlled Martinique during the Second World War), the source material (Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel), and a screenplay co-written by a literary master (William Faulkner) all take a backseat to the on- and off-screen romance between the two legends. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is perhaps most memorable for the 19-year-old Bacall seducing Bogart (and audiences) with her lesson on whistling. Screen acting debut for former model Lauren Bacall. To Have And Have Not Reviews: "A CASABLANCA-influenced love story set against a French Resistance backdrop in Martinique."-- Mike Clark, USA Today Hide Description

Help the Free French? Not world-weary gunrunner Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart). But he changes his mind when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?"
That red-hot match is Bogart and 19-year-old first-time film actress Lauren Bacall. Full of intrigue and racy banter (including Bacall's legendary whistling instructions), this thriller excites further interest for what it has and has not. Cannily directed by Howard Hawks and smartly written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman, it doesn't have much similarity to the Ernest Hemingway novel that inspired it. And it strongly resembles Casablanca: French resistance fighters, a piano-playing bluesman (Hoagy Carmichael) and a Martinique bar much like Rick's Cafe Americaine. But first and foremost, it showcases Bogart and Bacall, carrying on with a passion that smolders from the tips of their cigarettes clear through to their souls.

To Have And Have Not film
$11.29 Perhaps the most memorable film about the aftermath of World War II, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES unfolds with the homecoming of three veterans to the same small town. The leads all touch emotional truths: Myrna Loy seems able to express longing, joy, fear and surprise--mostly with her back turned--in a particularly poignant welcome home. The movie never glosses over the reality of altered lives and the inability to communicate the experience of war on the front lines or the home front. A landmark achievement. WWII vet Harold Russell, who lost his hands in the war, is the only person to win two Oscars for the same role, Best Supporting ...

To Have And Have Not movie DVD
$14.59 Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA) directs James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Pat O'Brien in one of the greatest gangster melodramas made during the Hollywood studio era. William "Rocky" Sullivan (Cagney) and Jerry Connolly (O'Brien), partners in mischief as boys, are separated when only Jerry is fast enough to get away from the cops after the duo steals fountain pens from a railroad car. Rocky, refusing to give the name of his friend, is sent off to a reform school where he falls under the influence of criminal elements. The grown-up Rocky's triumphant return to the neighborhood complicates the efforts of Jerry, now a parish priest, to keep a local group of boys (the Dead End Kids) out of trouble. When the gang begins to idolize Rocky, Connolly fears his good works may come to nothing. Meanwhile, Rocky vies for control of the criminal rackets in the neighborhood with mob boss Mac Keefer (George Bancroft) and a corrupt, double-crossing lawyer, ...

To Have And Have Not film
$14.55 Hollywood studios are notorious for liberally borrowing ideas from each other, with the resulting clutch of similarly-themed films often bewildering the public as they try to decide which movie to go and see. In 2005 Bennett Miller directed CAPOTE, an Oscar-winning dramatization of Truman Capote's traumatic experiences writing the celebrated novel IN COLD BLOOD. In 2006 Douglas McGrath (COMPANY MAN) directed INFAMOUS, a movie that follows exactly the same premise. Although it's difficult to see why such a story would need to be immortalized in celluloid for a second time, McGrath does throw in a few tricks to help separate the two films. Talking head interviews with some of Capote's contemporaries, such as Gore Vidal and Babe Paley, are used, and the movie has a lighter--almost comedic at times--feel to it than Miller's movie.
The basic premise of INFAMOUS is exactly the same as that of CAPOTE, so we witness Toby Jones's Capote traveling from New York to Kansas, settling into the town, interviewing the murderers, ...

$16.29 Peter Bogdanovich created an American film classic with his black and white drama THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. A quarter of a century later, Bogdanovich assembled many in the original cast including Jeff Bridges, Randy Quaid, Cybill Shepherd, and the Bottoms brothers to create a sequel based on a follow-up novel TEXASVILLE by original author Larry McMurtry. The shooting was fraught with problems and drama behind the scenes and the film was a unqualified bomb upon its release. This documentary looks at both the original and the sequel, explaining ...

| | Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia DVD (1974) Widescreen
To Have And Have Not film
$10.39 In 1974, Sam Peckinpah directed BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, a film that is, even for Peckinpah, relentlessly bleak in its portrayal of life. Tellingly, it was one of the last films Peckinpah produced; it was also the fearsome director's personal favorite of the many movies he directed. Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a piano-player who happens upon two bounty hunters who have been dispatched by a Mexican rancher to collect the head of Alfredo Garcia. It seems that Garcia had impregnated the rancher's daughter, who wants his head as indisputable proof that this deviant is dead, and won't be bothering his family again. Penniless and out of luck, Bennie does a little snooping of his own, discovers that his girlfriend knows where the final resting place of Garcia is, and decides to usurp the bounty hunters by severing Garcia's head and collecting the cash for himself. Peckinpah unleashes some ferocious scenes of violence as Bennie attempts to complete his task, while Oates is magnificent as Bennie, who slides into madness as events take a turn for the worse; he even resorts to talking to Garcia's decapitated head, and washing it in the shower.
A truly awesome addition to Peckinpah's canon of films, BRING ...
