Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Amaray Case Based on a popular series of video games, DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE is set on an exotic island where a group of extraordinary men and women face off against each other in a single-elimination fighting competition for a $10 million winner-take-all prize. The film focuses on three main competitors: Tina Armstrong (Jaime Pressly), a professional wrestler who wants to prove to herself, and the world, that she's not a fake; Princess Kasumi (Devon Aoki), who has gone against the laws of her kingdom by escaping on her own in order to search for her missing brother (Collin Chou), a former DOA participant; and Christie (Holly Valance), who, along with the mysterious Max (Matthew Marsden), is more interested in the $100 million locked away in a hidden vault than in the fighting prize. But the winner is going to have to get past some of the toughest men in the world, including Tina's father (real-life professional wrestler Kevin Nash) and island favorite Bayman (real-life six-time World's Strongest Man champion Derek Boyer). Meanwhile, behind the scenes, geeky nerd Weatherby (Steve Howey) is rooting for Helena (Sarah Carter), whose late father started the event, which is now in the hands of the questionably motivated Donovan (Eric Roberts). The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.
