An out-of-luck coach takes to the field one last time to help a team of misfits in this spoof of sports films, which grossed $13 million. It will be released in the theatrical PG-13 version and an unrated version. Bonuses: unrated: commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes; theatrical: featurettes, viral videos. A satire in the vein of EPIC MOVIE and DATE MOVIE, THE COMEBACKS, directed by Tom Brady (THE HOT CHICK), tackles the conventions of the inspirational sports movie with jock-like gusto. Led by washed-up coach Lambeau Fields (David Koechner), the losers of the title attempt to become a winning football team, while referencing a dizzying array of athletic-oriented films from Hollywood history, ranging from ROCKY to RADIO--the latter shamelessly parodied by a hapless, mentally challenged character named iPod (Jermaine Williams).
Gleefully goofy in its send-ups of sports movies, THE COMEBACKS revels in broad slapstick humor that perfectly suits Koechner, who is perhaps best known as the obnoxious Todd Packer on the TV series THE OFFICE. (Koechner's fellow OFFICE mate Melora Hardin is also present, though the show's downbeat, quirky humor is notably M.I.A.) Other actors in the mostly unknown cast include real-life former football star Carl Weathers (the ROCKY films and, of course, ACTION JACKSON) and Matthew Lawrence, the brother of Joey Lawrence, who plays a quarterback with distinctly non-macho tendencies. Boasting comedic moments as subtle as the school bus that plows into a character during one scene, THE COMEBACKS doesn't pretend to be sophisticated--it happily indulges in its lowbrow status, making for an enjoyably guilty pleasure. $11.79 Adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez's striking film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally nighttime and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright color for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller's co-direction as his cue to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly lovestruck Marv, a trenchcoat-clad beast who falls in love with prostitute Goldie (Jaime King) only to find her murdered by a demonic cannibal (Elijah Wood). In another segment, Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a rogue cop with a "bum ticker" whose goal in life is to save Nancy (Jessica Alba), an innocent stripper, from a murderous rapist (Nick Stahl). The third segment stars Clive Owen as a detective caught between murdered cop Jackie Boy ...

$15.65 Some of Batman's most formidable enemies line up to tackle him in this collection of 13 episodes from the animated TV show. $8.45 THE LAST LEGION is a reason to rejoice for action fans who prefer their battle scenes to be composed of flesh and blood rather than megabytes. Based on the novel by Valerio Manfredi, this is a sword-and-sandal epic that deftly weaves a tale of the fall of the Roman Empire with myth and magic, giving us plenty of swordplay and liberal doses of knowingly corny humor. In Rome of 476 A.D., 12-year-old Romulus Augustus (Thomas Sangster) is to be crowned emperor at the same time that barbarian king Odoacer (Peter Mullan) arrives with his fierce warriors--led by brutish Wulfila (Kevin McKidd)--to slaughter everyone in sight. With his family dead, young Romulus is captured and taken, along with his teacher--the wise mystic Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley)--to the island of Capri. Learning that the Byzantine Empire has offered a safe haven for Romulus, surviving Roman soldier Aurelius (Colin Firth) teams up with fierce female warrior Mira (Aishwarya Rai) and sets out to retrieve the boy. Deceit on the part of the Byzantines, however, necessitates that Aurelius change direction for Britannia, home of the last safe outpost for Romans.
In an era where every thrill-ride film strives to be louder, bloodier, and more boundary-stretching than the next, THE LAST LEGION shows a charming, family-friendly restraint. The cast, led by two veteran English actors (Kingsley and Firth, the good guys), two fine Scottish actors (Mullan and McKidd, the baddies), and a Bollywood superstar (Rai, grand in her action sequence), is clearly having ...

$8.79 Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this nail-biting political thriller from director Gavin Hood (TSOTSI). Showing the price and behind-the-scenes drama of post 9/11 anti-terrorist security policies, the film focuses on the controversial U.S. practice of transporting suspected terrorists to locations outside the U.S. for intense interrogation and, as the film suggests, torture. Here, it is Egyptian-born Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally), an engineer and family man, who becomes a CIA target. On his way home to Chicago from business in South Africa, Anwar disappears at the Washington, D.C., airport. The records show he boarded the plane, but he never returns to his pregnant wife, Isabella (Witherspoon), and small son. As Anwar is taken to an undisclosed location for questioning, several other plotlines are introduced. After his partner is killed by a suicide bomber, Douglas Freeman (Gyllenhaal), a young and relatively inexperienced CIA analyst, must step in to observe the brutal torture and interrogation of Anwar at the hands of the brutish Abasi Fawal (Igal Naor), whose own daughter has run away with the brother of a potential terrorist.
RENDITION tackles serious issues with an all-star cast that also includes a typically flawless Meryl Streep as a steely government ...

$7.15 Boris Karloff stars in this Mexican-English horror film as Matthias Morteval, owner of mysterious Morhenge Mansion. When dead bodies begin turning up nearby with their eyes torn out, Matthias is convinced the family curse must have been passed on, and he gathers the heirs to the mansion in an effort to flush out the killer. Lovely Lucy Durant (Julissa) is the heroine, who brings her police inspector fiancé (Andres Garcia), along for the ride. Together the lovebirds stalk the gloomy halls of Morhenge, encountering skeletons, taxidermy, weird organ music, and life-size toys that have a habit of coming alive and killing the relatives one by one...
This was one of the last films Karloff made before his death the following year. Director Jack Hill (who would later go on to launch Pam Grier to stardom with FOXY BROWN and COFFY) scripted and shot Karloff's scenes in Los Angeles, and the rest of the movie was completed in Mexico with a different director. The results are uneven, but fascinating, and should intrigue fans of Karloff, and the unusual.
