Fullmetal Alchemist - Vol. 13: Brotherhood film
$15.79 While it contains little of the artistry and none of the nuance of Quentin Tarantino's DEATH PROOF, HELL RIDE is a similarly fun retro romp through the seedier corners of American B-movie history. Written and directed by Larry Bishop (son of Rat Packer Joey Bishop), who also stars, HELL RIDE is a tribute to the biker flicks of the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The movie follows Pistolero (Bishop) and his two captains, the Gent (Michael Madsen) and Comanche (Eric Balfour), as they booze and brawl their way across the Arizona desert, with the ultimate goal of exacting revenge on a rival gang that murdered one of their members. A healthy mix of throat slitting, coke-sniffing, and naked female oil wrestling makes HELL RIDE one of the more gratuitously sensational films of recent memory; yet if one is able to get past the almost laughably blatant tastelessness on which the movie is built, there is a fairly good time to be had. As the dapper Gent, Madsen proves once again that he could read from the phonebook and still sound like one bad dude, and tip-of-the-cap cameos from Dennis Hopper and David Carradine solidify the film's enjoyably retro/po-mo vibe. Every aspect of HELL RIDE, from the washed-out cinematography to the Link Wray-style spaghetti western surf soundtrack to the pulped-up dialogue, is hyper-stylized and blatantly self-conscious, and that is ultimately what saves the film. If there was even a trace of seriousness here the movie would be unwatchable--luckily, ...

Fullmetal Alchemist - Vol. 13: Brotherhood DVD
$8.39 John Wayne, prized as a right-wing icon during the late 1960s and early 1970s, was often critical of Clint Eastwood during this period for the violent bleakness of his Westerns and the take-no-prisoners attitude of his Dirty Harry character. Apparently, he changed his tune, at least for the duration of this film's production, in which he stars as Lt. Lon McQ, an aging Seattle detective. When his best friend, narcotics cop Stan Boyle (William Bryant), kills two policemen before himself being shot, McQ's boss, Capt. Ed Kosterman (Eddie Albert), believes it to be the work of radicals, so he orders a roundup of same. McQ, however, believes that drug dealer Manny Santiago (Al Lettieri) might be responsible, since he's hired some shooters for what McQ believes is an imminent heist. This turns out to be the theft of impounded narcotics evidence, but when Santiago opens the glassine bags and finds only sugar, McQ realizes that his own department is corrupt. Furious at Kosterman because of his refusal ...

$9.69 Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WISEGUY, Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), a fancy house, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his association with his adopted family.
