Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Sensor Matic Leo McCarey's lighthearted romance combines with tragedy to tell the tale of two lovers who long to be together but are engaged to others. In this legendary tearjerker, the world's most eligible bachelor (Cary Grant) is set to marry an heiress. But unfortunately for his bride-to-be, while he's traveling alone on a luxury liner he meets Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) and realizes he's engaged to the wrong woman--and she's engaged to the wrong man. They finally agree to spend six months apart; if they still love each other at the end of that time, they will reunite at the top of the Empire State Building. But the path of true love does not always run smooth, and tragedy threatens to tear the couple apart. Leo McCarey directed both the original (LOVE AFFAIR) and this remake, and viewers often amiably battle over which film is the more touching. This much-loved film features the Academy Award-nominated title song and a splendid supporting cast. AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER figures prominently in SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, in which the female characters watch it constantly, with tears in their eyes. (The men watch it uncomprehendingly and untouched.)
This version is a remake of McCarey's 1939 film LOVE AFFAIR. According to Richard Roud in his CINEMA: A CRITICAL DICTIONARY, McCarey preferred the first version because "Cary Grant's irony in the remake took away from the 'beauty' of the original." The film was remade again in 1994 with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening.
The film was shown on the American Movie Classics cable network in its original Widescreen format in February 1994. Affair To Remember Reviews: "AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER evolves effortlessly, almost invisibly, from light romantic comedy to a kind of spiritual drama, as the characters cast off their public identities and approach their essences..."-- Dave Kehr, New York Times 5 stars out of 5 -- "This is a classic, combining romance, drama, comedy and style....A love story, but one that touches the heart..."-- Ultimate DVD Staff, Ultimate DVD Affair To Remember | Studio | 20th Century Fox | | Orig Year | 1957 | | All Time Sales Rank | 36630 | | CD Universe Part number | 7713353 | | Catalog number | 2255139 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 23, 2008 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Running Time | 119 Minutes | | Additional Info | Pink | | Movie Details | Color; Stereo Sound; Pink; Checkpoint; DVDs for the Cure Edition (Pink); Sensormatic |

5-Star Classic An Affair to Remember is by far one of the best classics of all time. A remake was made of this movie a few years ago; however, it couldn't touch this original with a ten foot pole. Every classic buff should have this movie as part of their collection. Over the years, I've seen this movie at least 12 times. Submitted by a reviewer (Washington DC) Was This Review Helpful? A WONDERFUL ENDING No sex, no violence, a wholesome, beautiful love story with a happy ending. I loved it! I own it, and now a friend asked for it as a Christmas gift. Submitted by Mary Ann (Princeton, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$12.89 Steven Spielberg's masterful adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel stars Whoppi Goldberg, in her impressive screen debut, as Celie, a sharecropper's daughter living in rural Georgia. The film opens in 1909 when Celie is a young girl, a victim of incest, pregnant with her father's child. Ugly and unloved, separated from her children and her sister, Celie's only option is marriage to an abusive, philandering husband (Danny Glover) who treats her little better than a slave. Her life changes forever when her husband brings his mistress, a beautiful blues singer named Shug (Margaret Avery), into the house. THE COLOR PURPLE was also the film debut for Oprah Winfrey, ...

$10.29 It is the late 1950s, but it might as well be the late 1850s in a small French town where everyone behaves as they should (supposedly), and attends church regularly. When a strong North wind blows through town, it brings the vivacious and mysterious Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Vianne is soon the talk of the town: an unwed mother who declines to go to church and opens up a chocolate shop in the midst of Lent. Her good-natured, honorable personality and psychic ability (she can predict what kind of sweets best suit each person, and magically cures each of them of their particular maladies) make her as irresistible as her delectable treats. However, Vianne and her daughter are resented by the conservative mayor, the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), and by the pious Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss), who has disowned her own spirited mother (Judi Dench, who plays Vianne's landlady), refusing the elderly woman access to her beloved grandson. This touching fairy tale, based on the novel by Joanne Harris, was filmed on location in rural France. An intelligent, exquisitely filmed fable that deals with the idea of 20th Century paganism rising up against a closed-minded church and a persevering aristocracy, CHOCOLAT is enjoyable, romantic, and entertaining, with affecting performances by both its stars and its supporting actors (Lena Olin and Johnny Depp.)
When mysterious stranger Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her spirited daughter arrive in a tranquil French town in the winter of 1959, nobody could ...

$10.29 Former video store clerk Quentin Tarantino's directorial debut, RESERVOIR DOGS, is a brutally funny, supercharged introduction to his supremely distinct cinematic vision, which was later to become one of the most mimicked styles of the 1990s. Mastermind Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney) assembles a crew of top-notch criminals to pull off a jewelry store heist. As the film opens it becomes immediately clear that the plan backfired, forcing the survivors, who have gathered at an abandoned warehouse, to figure out if one of them is, in fact, a police informer. The crew--Mr. White (Harvey Keitel), an aged veteran; Mr. Orange (Tim Roth), a wounded newcomer; Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), a psychopathic parolee; Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi), a bickering weasel; and Nice Guy Eddie (Chris Penn), Joe's son--begin to unravel as the pressure becomes too much for them to handle. When Joe arrives, the truth becomes clear in a vicious Mexican standoff.

$20.79 In this dark French thriller directed by Olivier Assayas, Connie Nielsen (GLADIATOR) stars as Diane, an ambitious corporate climber. As Diane ruthlessly cuts down her rivals, she finds herself negotiating an important deal with the imposing Hervé Le Millinec (Charles Berling) and the producers of hi-tech, pornographic Japanese anime films. Can Diane maintain control of her increasingly shadowy and confusing situation? And can she continue to eliminate her opponents before they eliminate her?
With DEMONLOVER, Assayas has created a film that is immersed in the seedy and corporate elements of early 21st century pop culture--a ...
