World War II Morocco springs to life in Michael Curtiz's (THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY) classic love story. Colorful characters abound in Casablanca, a waiting room for Europeans trying to escape Hitler's war-torn Europe. Humphrey Bogart plays Richard "Rick" Blaine, a cynical but good-hearted American whose café is the gathering place for everyone from the French Police to the black market to the Nazis. When his long-lost love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), surfaces in Casablanca with her Resistance leader husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), Rick is pulled into both a love triangle and a web of political intrigue. Ilsa and Victor need to escape from Casablanca, and Rick may be the only one who can help them. The question is, will he? Top-notch performances include Claude Rains as the chief of the French police and the major authority figure in Unoccupied France, Peter Lorre as the doomed Senor Ugarte, Sydney Greenstreet as Senor Ferrari, and Dooley Wilson as Rick's loyal friend and the café's pianist, Sam. The mesmerizing musical score, by Max Steiner, along with the well-structured plot, flawless acting, and unforgettable dialogue makes this one of the best films of all time.

CASABLANCA was an original selection to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1989. "As Time Goes By," the song that became this film's anthem, not to mention theme song, was originally written for the Broadway musical EVERYBODY'S WELCOME, which opened on October 13, 1931 and ran for 139 performances. The composer, Herman Hupfeld, was also known for the song "When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba." The film's producer, Hal B. Wallis, was awarded the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1943. In his 1995 memoir MY AMERICAN JOURNEY, General Colin Powell lists CASABLANCA as one of his favorite films. Additional credits: Hugh MacMullan (dialogue director), Robert Aisner (technical adviser). Copyright 1943 Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc.

Casablanca Quotes/Excerpts:

"Here's looking at you, kid."--Humphrey Bogart (Rick) to Ingrid Bergman (Ilsa) at least three times during the course of the film "Only one answer can take care of all our questions."--Ilsa just before kissing Rick "But of course, that was the day the Germans marched into Paris." "Not an easy day to forget. I remember every detail--the Germans wore gray, you wore blue."--Interchange between Rick and Ilsa at his cafe after seeing each other for the first time in years "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."--Rick about Ilsa

Casablanca Reviews:

"...Absolutely sound, rock-solid in its use of Hollywood studio craftsmanship....The black-and-white cinematography has not aged as color would. The dialogue is so spare and cynical it has not grown old-fashioned..." -- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"...One of the most perfect Hollywood movies ever made..." -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"Possibly the most famous film ever made, CASABLANCA has everything..."-- Ceri Thomas, Total Film

"...Here Humphrey Bogart transformed himself into a romantic hero..." -- Premiere Staff, Premiere

"Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart provide the chemistry that sets this apart from countless other tales of doomed wartime love affairs." -- Andrea Toal, Sight and Sound

5 stars excellent handling of an all time classic
According to Lauren Bacall, this movie is considered by many, to be the second best movie of all time. Although she doesn't say so, I'm sure Citizen Kane is in the number one slot. Considering the status placed on this film you would expect a certain amount of respect in the releasing of this movie. I felt that this release does not disappoint. It includes many behind the scenes interviews and shots that have become common on DVD releases. What makes this special, is that you don't generally get this kind of background on a film that is over 60 years old. While many of the sound tracks for the extras were lost many years ago, it is fascinating to see what has been saved after all this time. It also is an insight into the acting craft and how it was viewed at that time in watching the outtakes. All time great movie and an excellent DVD release.

Though she refuses Captain Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones) in her youth, Anne Elliot's (Sally Hawkins, LITTLE BRITAIN) love for her handsome but penniless suitor never dies. When he returns eight years later--a wealthy and high-ranking naval officer--she has the chance to set things right. While the two leads ably carry the film, the highlight is Anthony Head's (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) hilarious turn as Anne's snobby father. This Masterpiece Theatre production offers a splendid rendition of Jane Austen's final novel. Anne Elliot fell deeply in love with the handsome young naval officer Frederick Wentworth at the age of nineteen. But with neither fortune nor rank to recommend him, Anne was persuaded to break off her engagement. Eight years later, Anne has lived to regret her decision. She never stopped loving Wentworth, and when he returns from sea with fortune and rank, she can only watch as every eligible young woman in the district falls at his feet.

Andrew Davies, who scripted the beloved BBC miniseries PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, brings more of Jane Austen's work to the screen with this Masterpiece Theatre presentation of NORTHANGER ABBEY. In this gothic-tinged tale, Catherine Morland (Felicity Jones, MEADLOWLANDS) arrives at a centuries-old estate. But her creepy surroundings aren't nearly as intriguing as an attractive man named Henry Tilney (JJ Feild, THE SECRET LIFE OF MRS. BEETON) who lives there. Life imitates art in this adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's bestselling novel about a book group reading the work of Jane Austen. Each of the people in the group is at a different stage of life: there's Sylvia (Amy Brenneman), whose husband has just left her for another woman, and her daughter Allegra (Maggie Grace), who's looking for a woman herself. Bernadette (Kathy Baker) has six marriages under her belt, while Jocelyn's (Maria Bello) most significant relationship is with her dog. New to the group of friends are Prudie (Emily Blunt), a teacher who is unhappy with her marriage, and Grigg (Hugh Dancy), the group's only man--a sci-fi fan invited by Jocelyn to take Sylvia's mind off her failed marriage. As they make their way through Austen's novels, they discover that the writer's work is just as relevant in the 21st century as it was in the 19th. The group has its own Emma, and a sparring would-be couple bears striking resemblance to Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB succeeds largely thanks to the strength of its cast. Bello is better known for dramatic roles in films such as THE COOLER and THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, but she does an excellent job with this film's lighter tone. As know-it-all Prudie, Blunt steals just as many scenes as she did in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Though it might seem like a clubhouse with a "No Boys Allowed" sign, the men in the movie hold their own with the female cast. Jimmy Smits, Marc Blucas, and Kevin Zegers play supporting roles, but it's Dancy who deserves the most praise. As Griggs struggles to woo one of the women in the group, Dancy easily wins the heart of the audience with his geeky charm. Five women and one man discuss the work of Jane Austen at monthly book club meetings in this $3.5 million-grossing movie, which stars Maria Bello, Emily Blunt and Hugh Dancy. Bonuses: commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes.

Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay. Unusual names like "Biggie Smalls" (Calvin Lockhart), "Kansas City Mack" (John Amos), "Bootney Farnsworth" (Jimmie Walker), and "Fish an' Chips Freddie" (Morgan Roberts) add to the comic value of the film's line-up of characters. Cosby, with his usual raucous antics, is a perfect complement to Poitier's understated humor. Curtis Mayfield's music creates the right funky atmosphere for this film. Comedy about a pair of blue collar cons who raise funds for their fraternal order by hypnotizing a scrawny boxer into believing he's a mighty fighter, then betting heavily on him. Trouble ensues when gangsters figure out their plot and seek payback.

This collection presents the entirety of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, the beloved 1974-1983 television series based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's novels about the trials and tribulations of a young family that settles on the wild American frontier of the 1870s. Michael Landon stars as a simple farmhouse patriarch who heads a household consisting of his wife, four daughters, and, eventually, a slew of adopted children. Look for a late-series appearance by a young Jason Bateman as a boy whose parents were killed in a wagon accident. Proof that a family-friendly primetime drama can indeed be successful and enjoy a prosperous run, LITTLE HOUSE should be credited with paving the way for such later moralistic hits as 7TH HEAVEN. Included among these 200-plus episodes are three feature-length TV movie events and the revamped ninth season--dubbed LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: A NEW BEGINNING and considered by some to be a spin-off series--in which the focus shifted to middle daughter Laura (Melissa Gilbert) and her husband Almanzo in the wake of Landon's departure. This 60-disc set contains the series based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's books about a young pioneer family. Bonuses: featurette, interviews, commentary.
