Warner. World War II Morocco springs to life in Michael Curtiz's (THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY) classic love story. Colorful characters abound in Casablanca, a waiting room for Europeans trying to escape Hitler's war-torn Europe. Humphrey Bogart plays Richard "Rick" Blaine, a cynical but good-hearted American whose café is the gathering place for everyone from the French Police to the black market to the Nazis. When his long-lost love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), surfaces in Casablanca with her Resistance leader husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), Rick is pulled into both a love triangle and a web of political intrigue. Ilsa and Victor need to escape from Casablanca, and Rick may be the only one who can help them. The question is, will he?
Top-notch performances include Claude Rains as the chief of the French police and the major authority figure in Unoccupied France, Peter Lorre as the doomed Senor Ugarte, Sydney Greenstreet as Senor Ferrari, and Dooley Wilson as Rick's loyal friend and the café's pianist, Sam. The mesmerizing musical score, by Max Steiner, along with the well-structured plot, flawless acting, and unforgettable dialogue makes this one of the best films of all time. CASABLANCA was an original selection to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1989.
"As Time Goes By," the song that became this film's anthem, not to mention theme song, was originally written for the Broadway musical EVERYBODY'S WELCOME, which opened on October 13, 1931 and ran for 139 performances. The composer, Herman Hupfeld, was also known for the song "When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba."
The film's producer, Hal B. Wallis, was awarded the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1943.
In his 1995 memoir MY AMERICAN JOURNEY, General Colin Powell lists CASABLANCA as one of his favorite films.
Additional credits: Hugh MacMullan (dialogue director), Robert Aisner (technical adviser).

Casablanca Movie Review excellent handling of an all time classic According to Lauren Bacall, this movie is considered by many, to be the second best movie of all time. Although she doesn't say so, I'm sure Citizen Kane is in the number one slot. Considering the status placed on this film you would expect a certain amount of respect in the releasing of this movie. I felt that this release does not disappoint. It includes many behind the scenes interviews and shots that have become common on DVD releases. What makes this special, is that you don't generally get this kind of background on a film that is over 60 years old. While many of the sound tracks for the extras were lost many years ago, it is fascinating to see what has been saved after all this time. It also is an insight into the acting craft and how it was viewed at that time in watching the outtakes.
All time great movie and an excellent DVD release.

$9.79 This overheated melodrama tells the story of a proud slave-owning family in the antebellum South and their eventual descent into adultery, incest, and sexual congress with those of other races. There's a Southern belle who's a panting nymphomaniac, a white man who craves African flesh -- and every black male is a well-endowed sexual stallion. Louisiana plantation life around 1840 is the setting for this racy drama based on the book by Kyle Onstott.

| | King David DVD (1985)
Casablanca film
$7.05 An adaptation of the legendary biblical tale, director Bruce Beresford's film stars Richard Gere as King David, favorite of the God of Israel. Although only a shepherd boy, David is anointed as heir to the throne of Israel by Samuel (Dennis Quilley), who is disgusted with the weakness of Saul (Edward Woodward). When David brings the protracted war with the Philistines to an end by defeating their champion Goliath (George Eastman) in battle, he is celebrated by his people but must flee the country to avoid being killed by Saul, whose jealousy he has aroused. When Saul and his sons finally die in battle, David assumes the throne--but not without a sense that it is covered in blood. As time passes, he finds himself in vicious battles with neighboring tribes to ensure the survival of the Israelites. Despite David's many achievements, the exercise of power has a corrupting influence on the patriarch, and ultimately, even he is no longer favored by his God. Donald McAlpine's photography is superb, as is Beresford's direction.

Casablanca review
$9.85 Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay.
Unusual names like "Biggie Smalls" (Calvin Lockhart), "Kansas City Mack" (John Amos), "Bootney Farnsworth" (Jimmie Walker), and "Fish an' Chips Freddie" (Morgan Roberts) add to the comic value of the film's line-up of characters.
Cosby, with his usual raucous antics, is a perfect complement to Poitier's understated humor. Curtis Mayfield's music creates the right funky atmosphere for this film.
Comedy about a pair of blue collar cons who raise funds for their fraternal order by hypnotizing a scrawny boxer into believing he's a mighty fighter, then betting heavily on him. Trouble ensues when gangsters figure out their plot and seek payback.

| | Little House On The Prairie - The Complete Television Series DVDs (1974)
Casablanca video
$184.69 This collection presents the entirety of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, the beloved 1974-1983 television series based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's novels about the trials and tribulations of a young family that settles on the wild American frontier of the 1870s. Michael Landon stars as a simple farmhouse patriarch who heads a household consisting of his wife, four daughters, and, eventually, a slew of adopted children. Look for a late-series appearance by a young Jason Bateman as a boy whose parents were killed in a wagon accident. Proof that a family-friendly primetime drama can indeed be successful and enjoy a prosperous run, LITTLE HOUSE should be credited with paving the way for such later moralistic hits as 7TH HEAVEN. Included among these 200-plus episodes are three feature-length TV movie events and the revamped ninth season--dubbed LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: A NEW BEGINNING and considered by some to be a spin-off series--in which the focus shifted to middle daughter Laura (Melissa Gilbert) and her husband Almanzo in the wake of Landon's departure.
This 60-disc set contains the series based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's books about a young pioneer family. Bonuses: featurette, interviews, commentary.
