De Vuelta Al Barrio... CD (2000)
DE VUELTA AL BARRIO won the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Merengue Album.
Chichi Peralta is from the Dominican Republic, but unlike other Dominican vocalists, he doesn't sing merengue or bachata exclusively. Instead, merengue and bachata are only two weapons in the arsenal of the Latin pop/tropical singer, whose second Caiman album, De Vuelta Al Barrio, incorporates a variety of Latin elements. The charismatic Peralta isn't the least bit predictable, and you never know from one song to the next what Latin styles he's going to draw on. Dominican music (namely merengue and bachata) and Afro-Cuban salsa are perhaps the strongest influences on Peralta's Latin pop, but during this CD, he also incorporates everything from Puerto Rican plena to Colombian vallenato (Columbia's most prominent alternative to the famous cumbia rhythm) to Brazilian samba. One hears traces of Rio de Janeiro-ish Brazilian pop on ... |

Hardcore Vanilla CD (2001)
 | | | |
Hardcore Vanilla is the third release from Hellbent and their first album for Invisible Records. As such, it's peppered with appearances from many of that label's other artists, including Meg Lee Chin, Raymond Watts of Pig, and the ever-present Martin Atkins. This is generally a good thing since it allows for some impressive joint efforts and steers the material away from Hellbent's earlier efforts, which were little more than shameless copies of the band's predecessors, in particular Skinny Puppy. Certain songs are still very dated -- "Jet Boy Machine" would have sounded great in the early '90s -- but on the whole it's a competent and polished album. Hellbent is still lacking the necessary spark to separate from their faceless contemporaries, but this is a step in the right direction. ~ Jim Harper
Additional personnel includes: Jared Louche (vocals); Eric Powell (guitar, programming, background vocals); Bryan Black (programming, background vocals); Martin Atkins (drums);
