Flashback, a division of Rhino devoted to budget collections, has a winner with this sampling of the soul music of 1970. All ten tracks were Top Ten soul hits, five of them reaching the top of the Billboard chart and seven going gold. Six originated with Atlantic Records (one of which, Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia," was issued on its Cotillion subsidiary); two with Holland-Dozier-Holland Productions, which the songwriter/producers established after leaving Motown (the Chairmen of the Board's "Give Me Just a Little More Time" on Invictus and 100 Proof Aged in Soul's "Somebody's Been Sleeping" on Hot Wax); one with Stang Records (the Moments' "Love on a Two-Way Street"); and one with Chimneyville (King Floyd's "Groove Me"). The tracks trace the development of soul music in the '70s, the expressive pop/R&B of Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett combining with the Motown-styled Chairmen of the Board and the forward-looking funk of King Floyd.
