The duo of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller--better known as Adult--have evolved from the crystalline electro sounds of their earlier work, to the strident, malevolent punk of their latest outing WHY BOTHER?
Bristling with harsh, virulent rhythms and dissonant electronics, the music's grinding industrial bombast frames Kuperus's baleful caterwauling--a harrowing, sometimes frightful shriek that commands the songs with a rabid intensity. With indie rock acts defecting en masse to the glittery arpeggiated pastures of dance-punk and electro, few bands have taken the opposite course from synth pop to punk rock. Still, other tracks such as "Plagued By Fear" take a more conventional verse-chorus approach, leavening the punk-noise venom with a tuneful bass hook that's reminiscent of a female-fronted Joy Division. On the rancorous "Inclined To Vomit" Kuperus spits the hateful invective "you make me disgusted to a painful degree," while walls of synth noise billow like fire-engine sirens.
