Person to Person CD (2003)
Al Orlo music CDs. A popular singer in the R&B world of the 1960s who made "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" famous, Ben E. King has in more recent times sometimes appeared in jazz-oriented settings. For this live set, he is accompanied by trumpeter Tim Ouimette's tentet. The musicians perform Ouimette's swinging "Short Stomp" and "Harlem Nocturne" as instrumentals before the singer takes over. King, 61 at the time, is heard in excellent form whether revisiting a few of his hits or performing Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's "Person to Person," "There'll Be Some Changes Made," or "Let the Good Times Roll." King sounds quite comfortable and shows that, if he had been born earlier, he would have been a popular singer in the jump jazz idiom of the 1940s too. A fine outing. ~ Scott Yanow

New York Rendezvous CD (1988)
Al Orlo CD discography. Fusion heroes drummer Dave Weckl, guitarist Barry Finnerty, bassist Marcus Miller, and the Brecker Brothers on one cut, help flesh out the lineup for this 1987 set of instrumental pop, jazz-rock, and light jazz tracks. Most are short with a steady backbeat, room for quick solos, and arrangements heavy on bombastic openings and frenetic conclusions. One exception to the rule is the nine-and-a-half minute "Mirage," a song with a two-trumpet/saxophone/trombone frontline, plus guest spots from Bob Baldwin on synthesizer and arrangements from guitarist Al Orlo and Baldwin. "The Three Sisters" has some solid sax work by Fred Vigdor and an interesting twin guitar/twin sax arrangement. ~ Ron Wynn
