Tony Allen Biography
The Nigerian drummer Artist began his professional career playing in various highlife dance bands before starting a 14-year association with the charismatic bandleader Fela Kuti in 1965. Together, Allen and Kuti crafted the unique dance- and improvisation-oriented musical style known as Afro-Beat, in which Allen's propulsive drumming played a prominent part. By 1979, when Allen dissolved the partnership, he was recognized as a world-class musician. Subsequent decades found him successfully leading his own bands in further explorations of the style he had helped to create, as well as collaborating with such artists as Damon Albarn and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
