Cainian Chronicle CD (1996)

Evil guitar riffs, frenetic drumming, demonic screeching, and orchestral backdrops place this squarely in the Scandinavian black metal tradition, but Ancient also displays an admirable penchant for exploration on longer excursions like the four-part title track and the eight-plus minute "Song of Kaiaphas." And despite the largely unnecessary presence of his utterly disposable and ridiculous henchmen (pictured in spooky cloaks and corpse make-up -- oooh, scary!), Aphazel himself is clearly not messing around. The first Metal Blade release from Ancient, a black metal combo fronted by Norwegian transplant Aphazel, The Canian Chronicle is a surprisingly mature and memorable collection of hellish invocations.

But grindcore and death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and the infamous Deicide are anything but melodic. Diamond's Judas Priest-influenced fantasy metal is forceful but melodic-if you're seriously into Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensryche or Grim Reaper, you should be into Diamond as well. If you played King Diamond's recordings right after listening to some underground grindcore and death metal bands, you would notice a world of difference. Released in 2000, this collection finds 11 bands paying tribute to Diamond-many are underground death metal, black metal and grindcore bands (both American and European), and some are not as extreme. Nonetheless, a lot of death metallers have admired Diamond's satanic image and his interest in the Occult even though they don't sound anything like him.
