| Dawning CD (2002)
| | | | |
Archetype discography. From the first chordings on this disc, you gets the impression that you might be listening to the latest album by some new band from the Mötley Crüe school of metal. However, as the intro ends, it is apparent that this group owes far more to the neo-classical vein of fantasy metal. For fans of the bands of that genre (Rhapsody, Helloween, Stratovarius, et al.), this should be a welcome sound. For the rest, it gets a little over the top and self-indulgent from time to time. However, when the band chooses to break it down a bit, they come across closer to a classic Iron Maiden sound, and it works quite well. Musicianship, as one might expect of an album of this genre, is top-notch, and the vocal performance ranges from pseudo-operatic (the mainstay of the genre) to near death metal growling to Halford-esque screaming. ~ Gary Hill
Archetype: Greg Wagner (vocals); Chris Matyus (guitars); Jamie Still (bass guitar); Keith Zeigler (drums).

| Freehand Formula CD (2002)

Archetype CD discography. Working side by side for years to develop each others individual styles, producer Nezbeat and lyricist I.D. spawned a common sound. With the addition of long term cohort J-Mo on the decks, the trio became Archetype in the summer of 2000. For the next two years, the group played innumerable shows in the Lawrence/Kansas City area (and several throughout the midwestern region) which would help them build a strong base from which their music could expand. The body of work that would become the "Freehand Formula" was a creation of three like minds who's broad range of influences include artists such as Stevie Wonder, Beck, The Roots, D.I.T.C., and Madeski Martin and Wood, just to name a few. From where they draw their inspiration helps explain their unbound style and their endless drive to keep creating new, interesting, un-monotonous music. The chosen material on their first full length release "Freehand Formula" has been trimmed, cut and refined to represent the evolution of Archetype's collective vision thus far. From here they will only grow and progress as individual artists as well as a group. With out much more to be said, we'll let the music speak for itself. enjoy |
