It's a Circus World CD (1978)
Axis albums. Artist was a legendary band with Shreveport, Louisiana as its home base with local guitar hero, Danny Johnson, the drummer's drummer Vinnie Appice and bassist Jay Davis. Artist joined forces in NY with Rick Derringer in the 70's as the Derringer band. The ageless rock anthems of 'Armageddon' and 'Bandits of Rock' foreshadow Danny's next project of his solo band in the early 80's as Danny Johnson & The Bandits. In the 90's Danny joined John Kay & Steppenwolf, with Danny and John Kay's band opening the shows as The Rebels. In 2008 the original Derringer band reunited for a tour and hopefully more great rock and roll hoochie coo! Do you want to go to Heaven? Do it - rock n' roll style with Artist!
Over the years, rock & roll has had its share of one-album wonders-artists who only recorded one album when it seemed like they should have built a large catalogue. Artist turned out be one of those one-album wonders, which came as a surprise because the late 1970s power trio had potential. Consisting of Vinny Appice (Carmine Appice's brother) on drums and background vocals, Jay Davis on bass and lead vocals and Danny Johnson on guitar and lead vocals, Artist boasted talented musicians even though its material fell short of mind-blowing. It's A Circus World isn't a gem, but it's a decent collection of commercial arena rock. Catchy, if unremarkable, tunes like "Ray's Electric Farm" and "Cats in the Alley" gave one reason to believe that Artist might be around for awhile-the listener figured that even though this 1978 LP is imperfect, Artist could easily develop into a major force in arena rock on subsequent albums. But there were no subsequent albums for Artist, whose first album was also its last. ~ Alex Henderson
Personnel: Danny Johnson (vocals, guitar); Vinny Appice (vocals, drums, background vocals); Jay Davis (vocals).
