Additional personnel: Bob Drake (vocals, guitar, percussion); Kristoffer Blegvad (vocals); Adam Phillips, Chris Stamey (guitar); B.J. Cole (pedal & lap steel guitars); Geraint Watkins (keyboards). Though the music here is in a relatively straightforward pop-rock vein, Blegvad's strange, often macabre lyrical concerns and stylized, Dylanesque delivery make for an appealing blend of grit and gravy. His solo recordings have grown succesively more "conventional"-sounding, and HANGMAN'S HILL continues the trend, but an artist as deeply, wonderfully twisted as Blegvad could never be less than original. From his early days with avant-garde art-rockers like Slapp Happy and Faust to his later incarnation as a quirky singer-songwriter, Blegvad has always mixed a natural tunefulness with a taste for the bizarre.
