Abbey Is Blue CD (1959)
Bobby Boswell CD discography. Abbey Lincoln recorded three albums for the Riverside label in the late '50s, the last of which was ABBEY IS BLUE. On four cuts, including the album opener, Lincoln is backed by a three-piece horn section and a propulsive rhythm section (including her then-husband, Max Roach). The opening cut features the first vocal presentation of Herbie Mann's "Afro-Blue." Two pieces by Kurt Weill stand nicely alongside numbers by Ellington, Lincoln herself, and other jazz composers of the day. The entire album has the feel of a chamber piece, with its quietly propulsive arrangements and Lincoln's elegant simplicity and emotional depth. ABBEY IS BLUE is yet another highly recommended title from Abbey Lincoln's rich catalog.
Personnel: Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Les Spann (guitar, flute); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham, Tommy Turrentine (trumpet); Julian Priester (trombone); Phil Wright, Wynton Kelly, Cedar Walton (piano); Bobby Boswell (double bass); Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Long As You're Living CD (1960)
Bobby Boswell music CDs. The most obscure group that drummer Max Roach led actually recorded four albums in 1960; a quintet with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine (then a complete unknown), his brother Tommy on trumpet, trombonist Julian Priester and bassist Bobby Boswell. Strange that this Enja release is the only one of their recordings thus far to appear on CD. Although the playing of The Turrentines is not at the same innovative level as Roach's prior group with Booker Little and George Coleman, they come up with consistently fresh statements during the well-rounded set and the tenorman was already instantly recognizable. Highlights include a couple of Roach drum features, two Kenny Dorham compositions ("Lotus Blossom," "The Villa") and "Night in Tunisia." ~ Scott Yanow

Up All Night CD (1998)
 | | | |
Bobby Boswell CD discography. Singer Chizmo Charles made his recording debut as a leader on this CD, at the age of 70. What is more remarkable than his very late start is that Charles' voice could pass for 50. His versatility and the pure joy in his singing are quite appealing. Although largely a blues date, Charles also performs "Angel Eyes" quite credibly and the music ranges from swing to soul. The highlights include "Bed Bug Boogie," Elmore James' "Shake Your Moneymaker," "The Walkin' Blues," and "Bad Bad Whiskey." With fine support given by the four-piece Midnight Horns (which includes Kenny Blake on alto and tenor), a solid rhythm section, slide guitarist James Dougherty, Jr. (who wrote half of the tunes), and James King on harmonica, the singer is heard throughout in near-exuberant form. Why did it take Chizmo Charles so long to record? ~ Scott Yanow
