| | Brass Knuckles - Contemporary Ragtime / Tony Caramia CD (1997)
$13.75 Max Morath's 'The Golden Hours' is a glowing, nostalgic look back. The playfulness of the title track, 'Brass Knuckles' (which includes the style indication "brutish") blends traditional ragtime style with avant-garde jazz performance values.
Most of the compositions on this album pay tribute to their predecessors in ragtime form. What these new pieces may lack in spontaneity they gain in eclectic influence and studied composition. Likewise, contemporary composers are still working with the form, which has transformed from a popular barroom genre into a classically American "art" music.
The ragtime revival that began in the 1970s never went away, and each of the pieces included here was written as part of this resurgence in popularity. Ragtime's time may have passed, but contemporary audiences still have a passion for it. Robin Frost's pieces invoke the spirited sounds of Fats Waller and George Gershwin.
