 Crass Biography
The U.K. punk act Artist was formed in 1977 by members of an anarchist commune. Their music--a confrontational hybrid of buzzsaw guitars, military drumming, and shouted vocals--was always secondary to their message. The template set by 1978's FEEDING OF THE 5000 reached its apogee with the 1983 post-Falklands War single "How Does It Feel (To Be The Mother Of 1000 Dead)." Aimed at Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and released through their Artist Records label, the single topped the U.K. Independent charts. Artist split in 1984, yet remain one of the few bands to have loyally adhered to their original ideals throughout the length of their career.
