Matt Elliot albums. "An Even Harder Shade Of Dark" begins with funky military percussion and scratchy decks while the main theme is a reverberating minor key sequence loop. Ultimately strings enter the mix too, giving added richness and depth, reaching a point where a distant soprano and crying baby can be discerned. This dissolves into a lo-fi crackling harp melody and low strings. Another song's theme is grating shards of electronic sound-- like grinding metal--until the distant wavering choir emerges. This may seem a scary prospect, and to the uninitiated it may jar, but the dark and sinister wailings and drum-roll rhythms have an incredible lyricism and musicality. To pigeonhole the work of the Third Eye Foundation as drum 'n' bass would be an ignorant travesty: it's so much more complex. This album opens with Latin percussion that soon subsides into machine-gun trip-hop beats. Unkle-esque strings come and go and a didgeridoo-like growl (a vocal sample?) recurs in various guises. "For All The Brothers And Sisters" is a frightening construction. I Poo Poo on Your Juju -- surely a more meaningful or attractive title could have been generated? -- assembled hard-to-find Third Eye Foundation remixes, along with one new track. To its credit, it doesn't sound like an odds-and-ends collection of reworkings, but strong enough to hold up on its own merits. The Third Eye Foundation, the project of Matt Elliott, has sometimes been portrayed as a drum'n'bass act. But actually this would be more aptly characterized as intelligent and eclectic electronica, only sometimes using drum'n'bass elements. It's a diverse grouping, including a treatment of a work by French composer Yann Tiersen and a remix of a cover of Jonathan Richman's "When I Dance."
