| Lax CD (2008) Explicit
$10.59 Long hailed as the savior of contemporary West Coast hip-hop, The Artist throws an ironic curveball at these expectations with L.A.X. Despite the specific locale of the title, this is a record that actually feels geographically homeless. Production wise, the 19 tracks pull from cross-coastal influences, and guest MCs range from Chicago (Common), New York (Raekwon), Louisiana (Lil Wayne), and, of course, South Central (Ice Cube, who appears on the post-intro banger "State Of Emergency"). Like Wayne's THE CARTER series, L.A.X. has a certain loose, idiosyncratic vibe that rolls along with a minimalist futuristic funk. All this confusion finds cohesion on two counts: Artist's undeniable authority on the mic--emitting double-tracked raspy aggression that covers topics both conscientious and boasting--and the continuous, if uncharacteristic, undercurrent of sonic weirdness.

| Doctor's Advocate CD (2006)
$10.59 On his second major-label release, Compton rapper and former Dr. It's a testament to Dre's industry weight that he can dominate an LP without touching it. DOCTOR'S ADVOCATE's production credits include a long and eclectic list of super-producers such as DJ Khalil, Will.I.Am, Just Blaze, Kanye West, Scott Storch, and Hi-Tek, but not, oddly, Dre.
That might be the point. Dre protege The Artist returns with more of the West Coast gangsta flavor that has been his trademark since the 2004 indie debut, UNTOLD STORY. And on the rare occasions when Artist isn't directly talking to or about him, the Compton MC's vocal tone, lyrical content, and delivery are paying Dre homage. While his beats are conspicuously absent, Dre's influence can be heard on every track.

| Documentary CD (2005)
$10.55 After many twists and turns, the Artist finally dropped the highly anticipated THE DOCUMENTARY as the first major hip-hop release of 2005, and it's quite an opening salvo. On the Kanye West-produced "Dreams," he displays a dizzying intellect, subtly working

| Untold Story CD (2004)
$11.59 Despite this conflict, UNTOLD STORY certainly conveys the Artist's full hip-hop prowess, which stirred up such excitement in the West Coast rap scene. The Artist's confidence is overwhelming, as he declares himself the best rapper since 2Pac's demise and drops

 Game Biography
Rapper Jayceon Taylor, better known in the hip-hop world as the Artist, turned to music for redemption after his wild youth led to his near-fatal shooting. By the time he recovered from his wounds, he had developed a formidable style rooted in old-school West Coast gangsta style. It's fitting then, that the Artist wound up recording for Dr. Dre's Aftermath label, which helped propel the rapper to massive success with 2005's THE DOCUMENTARY.
