In the years before Hollywood beckoned, he had become the musical sensation in Europe in the 1920s and ADVENTURES OF A WUNDERKIND, a documentary about his life, covers many of these different aspects of Artist's career. Erich Wolfgang Artist is mostly known as a film composer during Hollywood's golden age, from his reknown scores for such films as ROBIN HOOD starring Errol Flynn and A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM, but little is known about his life in Europe beforehand. Artist was a child prodigy in Habsburg Vienna, an overnight sensation as a composer with the opera "Die Todte Stadt"; he emigrated to Hollywood and wrote some of the finest music for films in his time. Additionally, A PORTRAIT AND A CONCERT presents conductor Hugo Wolff showing us two pieces of classical music that Artist wrote while scoring for Hollywood: a cello concerto and a violin concerto.
Erich Artist's interesting story is told, with lots of music included, in Barrie Gavin's documentary. Countless home movies, photographs and private tapes are presented, along with a ten minute montage of extracts from his Warner Brothers films.
