Larry, Mike, and Dewey McPeak have been around as a group for almost 25 years but have made relatively few albums during that period. Their eighth is a winning program of originals by Larry and cover versions of material by such legendary country and bluegrass artists as Bill Monroe, Marty Robbins, and Jimmie Davis. Though the McPeaks' voices are starting to roughen with age, their trio harmonies are still sweet and tight, and they work particularly nicely on a version of the Delmore Brothers' "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar" and Larry McPeak's aching "Why You're Leaving Me This Time." Dewey McPeak's banjo playing is another of this group's prime attractions -- though he avoids ostentatious displays of virtuosity, his blend of straight-ahead Scruggs-style playing, melodic licks, and single-string Reno-esque passages makes him a pleasure to listen to, especially on "I Can't Get Over You" and "Don't Count the Rainy Days." Other highlights on this album include fine versions of the creepy (and rarely recorded) murder ballad "Poor Ellen Smith" and of Bill Monroe's "Used to Be." ~ Rick Anderson Recording information: Eastwood Studio, Cana, VA.
