Sung in French. This opera by Meyerbeer tells the story of explorer Vasco Da Gama whose sea voyage takes him to the African coast where he falls in love with the beautiful and exotic Selika. The French libretto was written by Eugene Scribe. It is the last work of the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer.
L'Africaine was first performed at San Francisco Opera on November 3, 1972; the current performance, the original French version, is a revival of the new production of the grande opra created by the opera house for its program in September 1988.
