The themes are both primitive and futuristic, and are conjured with tension-filled ostinatos on piano and plucked strings, simple woodwind phrases, a bass slide whistle, and ragged, echoing percussion. Jerry Goldsmith's score sounds as fresh and startling today as it did on the film's 1968 release.
Clearly influenced by modernist composers like Bartok and Stavinsky, Goldsmith employs fragmented phrases, jarring rhythms, dissonance, and the use of silence as a compositional device. It includes previously unreleased material, new cover art and liner notes, a suite from the 1971 sequel ESCAPE FROM THE Artist, Alfred Newman's famous "Twentieth Century Fox Fanfare," and the original score in its entirety with newly remixed and remastered sound. The soundtrack to Artist has been issued on several labels, but the Varese Sarabande edition is the natural pick. There are few moments of reprieve in the score; the music reflects the film's depiction of an off-kilter reality, and even low-key selections (like "A New Mate") are underscored by an ominous mood.
