| Driven CD (2001)
| | | | |
Solarized music CDs. Solarized tosses together all the components needed for universal stoner rock on Driven, the New Jersey outfit's 2001 Meteor City offering. Vocalist James Hogan, guitarist Dave Topolenski, drummer Reg Santana, and bassist Mike Fiore dish out some compact but downright lethal songs on this release. The riffs are appropriately heavy, and include all the right '70s proto-metal references. Stoner pioneers Kyuss come to mind when listening to the massive grooves on tracks like "Chrome Shop." The cowbell-driven "Angel" is another highlight with its fine linear riffing. Upbeat miscalculations "Stab Yor Back" and "Firefight" halt Driven's momentum, before "Conspiracy" and "World Without End" finish off the disc with a hazy blast of New Jersey stoner rock. On this record, Solarized demonstrates its ability to riff on the best elements of the geographically separate but thematically similar approaches of its genre. ~ Vincent Jeffries
Hallucinogenic sci-fi lyricism and a superfuzz sound which combines Hendrix with Sabbath - as cosmic groove rock goes, New Jersey quartet Solarized have got it all. KKKK (out of 5) - Kerrang!

| Neanderthal Speedway CD (1999)
Solarized discography. New Jersey stoners Solarized are quite impressive on their 1999 debut, Neanderthal Speedway. The band's sound owes a lot to early Monster Magnet (most notably on "Psyclone Tread," "Black Light Swill," and "February Sixth"), and the album actually features guest appearances by a few Magnet members on "Gravity Well" and the instrumental "Cloud King." In a genre rarely known for its great vocalists, singer Jim Hogan is certainly the band's weak link, but his excellent songwriting on "Shifter" and "Fire Breather" more than makes up for this. Other highlights include "Aftermath" (with its cool midsection) and the pounding "Nebula Mask." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Solarized includes: Jim Hogan, Reg Santana, Tim Cronin, Ed Mundell.

| Rise 13: Magick Rock, Vol. 1 CD (1999)
Solarized CD discography. The 1990s saw the rise of a style that came to called stoner rock, which found a lot of post-Baby Boomer bands recalling the heavy metal and psychedelic hard rock of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Black Sabbath was the band that had the greatest influence on stoner rock, but stoner bands also showed an appreciation of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blue Cheer and others. When a lot of alternative metal bands of the 1990s were being influenced by hip-hop, industrial noise and grunge, stoner bands tended to favor a more retro approach. ... |
