| | Louis Armstrong Priceless Jazz Collection CD Louis Armstrong Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Recorded between 1935 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Jim Macnie.
Although it is by no means a definitive collection, GRP's Priceless Jazz is a nice sampler of Louis Armstrong's Decca work, highlighted by "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Struttin' with Some Barbecue," "Gone Fishin'," "What a Wonderful World" and an alternate take of "Solitude." There's nothing rare on the compilation, so it's not necessary for collectors, but it's not a bad sampler for casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Priceless Jazz Collection CD music
$9.99 It was big news in 1969 when former key members of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies--three of the finest bands of the '60s--splintered off to form their own trio. Despite their already-proven talents, few could have imagined the gossamer vocal blend that would become the trademark of supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band's debut ...

| | Courtney Pine Underground CD (1997)
Priceless Jazz Collection music CDs
$14.29 Courtney Pine and company turn in an eclectic batch of tunes on UNDERGROUND. A hugely talented saxophonist, Pine is never satisfied to stand in one spot for long. In one song he may cover a myriad of bases from hip-hop to funk to hard-bop and any place in between. Generous use of samples and turntables and the accompaniment of young lions like Nicholas Payton, Mark Whitfield, and Cyrus Chestnut show right away this is no run-of-the-mill blowing session. Pine's improvisations alone reflect a rich background of influences from John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy to David Sanborn and Clarence ...

| | Francisco Aguabella H2o CD (1999)
Priceless Jazz Collection album
$13.55 There is no shortage of conguero-led Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz groups in the world. With so many household names like Poncho Sanchez and Ray Barretto to choose from, why stop and take notice of the slightly below the radar Francisco Aguabella? All questions will be answered and doubt will disappear at the first listen to 1999's H2O. While other percussionist/bandleaders have their roots firmly in the mambo dance craze of the '50s and '60s, Aguabella's music is born of rhumba. The difference is palpable. From his distinct, clear, sharp tone to his enigmatic, quinto-driven phrasing, Francisco, though a staple of the New York scene for many decades, never left Havana. Producer ...
| | Donald Harrison Real Life Stories CD (2002) (Import) Import; Germany
Priceless Jazz Collection CD music
$15.65 Donald Harrison, alto alumnus of the Art Blakey and Eddie Palmieri bands, likes to blend funk, reggae, and swing rhythms into something he calls "nouveau swing" (releasing a CD by that name in 1997, on Impulse!). There is a fresh, contemporary feel to this Nagel Heyer debut, along with a nod to tradition in Harrison's tonal and harmonic homage to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Superb pianist Eric Reed plays on seven tracks, supplying the sly, cartoon-villain riff in the opener, and the film-noirish chording on the title track. He also wrote the contemplative "Strange Day," where Harrison builds a dynamic and forceful solo. "Oleo" and "I'm ...
