The Stone Roses: Ian Brown (vocals); John Squire (guitar); Gary Mounfield (bass); Reni (drums, background vocals).
Producers: John Leckie, Peter Hook, Paul Schroeder, Garage Flowers.
Routinely named as the greatest British album of the past 20 years in British music mag polls, sometimes rivaling such sacred cows as REVOLVER whenever those publications decide to do a Greatest Albums Ever list, THE STONE ROSES remains one of those classic albums that somehow defies translation across the pond. To be sure, it's not that the British overrate the Stone Roses. Rather, it's that the U.S., apart from some anglophiles and Gen-Xers, missed the golden moment when the Stone Roses were the best band in the world, capturing a crystalline moment where nostalgia for the Summer of Love refracted through the prism of burgeoning acid house. Unlike the Happy Mondays, the Stone Roses weren't really immersed in the pulsating E-underworld of raves, but their music was certainly informed by this new thumping psychedelia as much as it was by the '60s jangle, which is why THE STONE ROSES can feel somewhat out of time even as it thoroughly, undeniably is about its moment.
That timelessness is one of the chief reasons THE STONE ROSES endures as a modern classic and why it's been given this spectacular 20th Anniversary reissue. There are multiple editions, all of interest: a basic remastered single-disc, an extensive two-disc/one-DVD set that pairs the original album with a "Lost Demos" CD and video of a live show from Blackpool Empress Ballroom, then finally, a gargantuan set that has all this, plus another disc that rounds up the non-LP singles and B-sides as well as more extensive liner notes, art prints, and a USB disc with unreleased backwards tracks, music videos, and other collector's treats. All this is a fanatics treasure, and there is quite a bit of musical worth here too, especially on the B-sides, which may have already been reissued on Made of Stone but is nice to have paired here. Still, the main revelation of the "Lost Demos" is how perfect John Leckie's production of The Stone Roses is. On these demos, the songs are firmly intact but the colors are muted, and Ian Brown's notoriously wobbly vocals are quite shaky; they are clearly a blueprint, not a final product. Listening to the full album after the demos, THE STONE ROSES seems even more wondrous: Leckie coaxed the right performances out of all four members, letting Mani and Reni lock into a muscular, fluid groove, encouraging John Squire to paint as vividly with his guitar as he did in his artwork, finding a way for Ian Brown to seem swaggering and spectral simultaneously, a resurrection whose adoration was an inevitability. For longtime fans, this is reason enough to dig into this deluxe anniversary edition, and for those who have never known, there's no better place to get enchanted
Since the Stone Roses were the nominal leaders of Britain's "Madchester" scene -- an indie rock phenomenon that fused guitar pop with drug-fueled rave and dance culture -- it's rather ironic that their eponymous debut only hints at dance music. What made the Stone Roses important was how they welcomed dance and pop together, treating them as if they were the same beast. Equally important was the Roses' cool, detached arrogance, which was personified by Ian Brown's nonchalant vocals. Brown's effortless malevolence is brought to life with songs that equal both his sentiments and his voice -- "I Wanna Be Adored," with its creeping bassline and waves of cool guitar hooks, doesn't demand adoration, it just expects it. Similarly, Brown can claim "I Am the Resurrection" and lie back, as if there were no room for debate. But the key to The Stone Roses is John Squire's layers of simple, exceedingly catchy hooks and how the rhythm section of Reni and Mani always imply dance rhythms without overtly going into the disco. On "She Bangs the Drums" and "Elephant Stone," the hooks wind into the rhythm inseparabRolling Stone (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The debut album by the Stone Roses remains a blast of magnificent arrogance, a fusion of Sixties-pop sparkle and the blown-mind drive of U.K. rave culture."

5 stars Best Debut Album Ever!
"The Stones Roses" is, without a doubt, the best debut album of any band, even better than Oasis' debut "Definitely Maybe!" A must for fans of rock from any generations. Any Oasis fans should definitely check this out as The Stone Roses were an obvious inspiration for them. One of the best albums ever as well! Buy it, you won't regret it!!!!

3 stars Reni & Mani, King Monkey and Wizard
an astounding creation, a criminally underrated rhythm section and the greatest guitarist of his generation. This album paved the way for a lot of nonsense (oasis, the charlatans etal) but returning to the origin you find utopia, shame the flame died

5 stars This album has got IT
This album has just got that "magic" than makes it a staple in my CD collection. It's not exactly the most intelligent or original album i've heard, but it's tightly filled with charismatic, groovy, moving songs, and that's enough for me to give this 5 stars.

Like the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise, GLEE became more than a TV show when several of its songs cracked the Hot 100, including the number four hit "Don't Stop Believing." That song kicks off this soundtrack, the first in a series of albums cataloging the music performed by the show's cast. Not all GLEE members are created equal--some cast mates are far better actors than singers--but ...

Budget price 16-track collection for the Euro-pop act. Karussell. 1996. Liner Note Author: Mark Brennan .
By 1996, 14 years after ABBA's demise, there had been plenty of compilations released in the U.S. and Europe -- Greatest Hits (1976), Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 (1979), The Singles (The First Ten Years) (1982), Gold -- Greatest Hits (1992), and More ABBA Gold -- More ABBA Hits (1993), to name only the major ones. This was one of the minor ones, and its compilers seemed to be trying to avoid the obvious hits that had been covered in so many previous collections, instead picking tracks that might have been released as singles in some territories, even if they were not the major single releases sanctioned by the group's Swedish label, or album tracks. The major exception, and the album's most familiar song, was the lead-off track, "Does Your Mother Know," a rare ABBA single that featured Björn Ulvaeus rather than Anni-Frid Lyngstad or Agnetha Faltskog on lead vocals, but one that made the U.K. Top Five and the U.S. Top 20. More typical were "On and on and On," a hit in the Far East and a chart entry in the U.S., but never released as a single in Europe, and "The Visitors," which only the band's American record company deemed fit for ...

J Church's Meaty, Beaty, Shitty Sounding is a odds-and-ends collection that gathers 7" singles dating back as far as 1993 ("Disappear") and going all the way through 2001. The biggest curiosity here has to be the crop of Electric Light Orchestra covers ...

8ball & MJG (or Eightball & MJG, as they used to call themselves) have been the kings of Memphis rap for quite some time now, even going so far as to refer to themselves as "living legends." That's not exactly an overstatement. They've inspired countless Southern rappers and helped to foster a strong hip-hop community in their home city, and now, signed to Bad Boy Records, they're able to reach an even wider audience. Their second album on Diddy's label, Ridin High, is a super-produced tribute to the things the duo love best: drugs, money, and women (there's even a song titled "Alcohol Pussy Weed"). From the first single, "Relax and Take Notes" (featuring a Biggie line from "Dead Wrong," not any new material from the deceased rapper), to "Worldwide" to "30 Rock" (the only track to have a non-Southerner guest, this one being Mr. Combs himself), 8 and MJ rhyme their way through heavy synth crunk beats and smooth slow jams. Their lines aren't revolutionary -- the kind of typical braggadocio so much associated with hip-hop at this point -- but their delivery is fluid and well practiced, their cadences moving from singsongy triplets to rough and fast eighth notes easily, and only occasionally ...
