The Backstreet Boys self-titled 1997 debut album endeared the group to millions of teens and pre-teens with its radio-friendly blend of pop harmonies and danceable beats. MILLENNIUM finds the Boys in the unenviable position of following up the mind-blowing success of the first album. Less ambitious artists might wither under such pressure, but the Backstreet Boys beat the dreaded sophomore slump in style. In the tradition of the debut, the album is a combination of romantic ballads guaranteed to make your little sister sob, and syncopated, eminently danceable, upbeat tunes. Throughout, it's the rich combination of the members' voices that creates the distinctive sound the group's legion of fans has grown to love. Most notably though, there is an added maturity in both the songs and the performances. It seems, regardless of their fans' fervent wishes, that even Backstreet Boys can't help but grow up.

Rolling Stone (6/10/99, pp.120-122) - 3 out of 5 - Good - "...an album filled with examples of their forte: New Jack doo-wop and lyrically trivial, rhythmically insistent funk lite..." Spin (7/99, p.128) - 7 (out of 10) - "...boogies deftly and punks daftly..." Fun, but not good... First of all, I'm a huge pop music fan, and I guess I know how to judge a pop album. So, here's my review. This one, even being the best-selling album of 1999, isn't so good. There's a few okay songs, like "Larger Than Life", or "It's Gotta Be You", but it's hasn't got the strenght of a great pop album such as "...Baby One More Time" or "Christina Aguilera". It's a weak album, not their best. Submitted by Gihad (Brasília, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It's relative I'm not a backstreet boys fan but i must say that their songs aren't so bad. But all the comment of this album either being thrash or the album of the century is a tad bit exaggerated, because their songs aren't really junk, like Blue, neither are they fantastic. Brian and Howie are probably the only two who have real talent. Their vocals are the best of the boys, as you'll hear for yourself. The downside of this album is the number of leads Nick Carter gets, because he just screws the songs up, no matter how beautiful the tune sounds, or how touching the lyrics are. Unless you are a typical deaf but not blind teen, you'll be so put off when Nick sings that you'll dislike "I need you tonight." But on the whole, this album is quite alright, for some light listening. Submitted by westlife_fan (Singapore) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
