Principally recorded at Face To Face Studios, Southfield, Michigan and live at The Power Center, Houston, Texas. PURPOSE BY DESIGN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Gospel with a slick ... Full Descriptionpop hip-hop sheen. This album by the former Winans member is a dramatic snapshot of the genre as it enters the new millennium--which is to say that it appropriates a number of highly secular stylistic elements. If you weren't paying attention to the lyrics, you'd be excused for thinking you were hearing an En Vogue record.
In any case, Fred Hammond is a powerful singer and songwriter (and on several cuts, a monster bass player), and the album is eclectic in the best kind of way. There's a first-rate update of Sam Cooke's "Jesus Be a Fence Around Me" (originally a hit for the Soul Stirrers), while Hammond's "Press" is a sly piece of '70s funk (think the Ohio Players singing for the Lord). The album's best moments, however, are the slower ballads; "Give Me a Clean Heart" is a vocal showcase for Hammond, with a melody that could have been written by Christopher Cross (!), and "You Are the Living Word" is a dramatic choral workout that comes the closest to traditional gospel.

Purpose By Design CD music
$15.65 Under the guiding hand of Hammond, this double disc represents the place where the church meets the funk. R&B's roots have always been in Gospel music to begin with, so it makes sense that someone like Hammond would come along. With the able assistance of a crack funk band, Hammond mixes floor-shaking rhythms with propulsive, rhythmic keyboards and guitars and a gospel choir that supports his own vocal ululations. While the lyrics are exclusively spiritual in nature, the beat is undeniably danceable. Ultimately, PAGES OF LIFE is the intersection of theology and rhythm, achieved so seamlessly that you can't tell where the testifying ends and the harmonizing begins.

This journey through R&B gospel phenomenon Kirk Franklin's life so far is an absorbing, sometimes traumatic, ultimately inspirational look at one man's path to finding his faith. Commencing with an introduction portraying a woman abandoning her child to the arms of her grandmother, a scenario that recalls Franklin's own infant abandonment, the album quickly takes us through an uplifting church ceremony in the rousing gospel chants of "Hosanna" and the Shirley Caesar-led "Caught Up," to "911," a confessional dialogue with Bishop T.D. Purpose By Design songs
$14.15 Biz insiders call Fred Hammond "the Babyface of gospel," due to his multitude of talents. Skilled as a producer, singer, songwriter, musician, and label boss, Hammond made music news with the groups Commissioned and Radical For Christ, and has made more inroads into the music mainstream then nearly any other contemporary gospel artist. The third chapter of Hammond's PAGES OF LIFE series arrives in sufficiently resplendent fashion to match the expectations of fans.
The breadth of Hammond's musicianship is evident throughout; the undulating "Show Yourself Strong" flirts with Latin rhythms, while "You are My Daily Bread" opens with a highly syncopated, African-sounding beat, and Mary Mary makes a guest appearance, adding some sassy R&B vocals to the hip-hop-inflected "Great." But at the end of the day, it's the impassioned voices of Hammond and his choir delivering heartfelt songs of praise that make up the spiritual center of SPEAK THOSE THINGS.
