Marian McPartland can be many different pianists, as evidenced by her empathetic playing with the many pianists whom she has duetted on her NPR show, Piano Jazz. The piano duets on this album aren't from the show; instead McPartland invited some of her favorite duet partners to celebrate her 80th birthday by taking part in this recording. When she plays with Tommy Flanagan she adopts his subtle, swinging touch and wit. With Renee Rosnes there is a harder edge, both women going for the full, physical use of the keyboard. "Just Friends" with George Shearing is a trip to a swank bistro, with an elegant stride style alternately employed by both pianists.
Shearing/McPartland's version of the latter's own "Twilight World" shows her progressive side, as does her free improvisation "Chrysalis," with Geri Allen. These two women's shared language includes plucked and strummed piano strings, modern harmonies, and a dramatic use of silence and mysterious textures. Dave Brubeck's "Marian McPartland", which he and the song's inspiration perform, begins with a tender, reflective intro before swinging into an inspired exchange of solo ideas over a distinctly Brubeck-esque set of changes.

Energetic and radio-friendly, Marvelous 3's strong full-length debut, Hey! Album, shows the Atlanta band's roots in a mixture of '70s pop/rock with '90s power pop. Reminiscent of Cheap Trick and the Cars, Marvelous 3 sounds like Ben Folds Five traded their piano for lead guitar. Hey! is a likeable, melodic album, full of self-conscious and self-deprecating lyrics bordering on preciousness. While Butch Walker's I-wish-I-was-punk vocals are not particularly original, the album manages to salvage itself, mostly due to tight arrangements and seamless production. The lyrics and music often contradict each other, as many of the songs deal with being trapped or jilted, while the music sounds carefree and energetic: a near-perfect combination of angst and bliss. Fountains of Wayne turn self-conscious alt-rock geekdom into an unassailable art form on their second album UTOPIA PARKWAY. They combine classic power-pop song structure with a knack for the killer hook and an endless supply of self-referential lyrics detailing the lives of East Coast hipsters growing up in the postmodern age. Perfect pop harmonies, ringing guitars and the occasional synth sweep (for retro new wave credibility) match lyrics about "playing in a cover band" and taking "the N train down to Coney Island."
It quickly becomes plain that the outsider edge of the songs comes from the fact that the songs' characters are kids from the 'burbs who enter the city in search of deliverance, or at least relief from boredom. This scenario's apex is reached on "Laser Show," about driving into New York City's Hayden Planetarium to see Pink Floyd and Metallica laser shows. God bless those who write about what they know.
