Xenakis: Pléïades / Les Percussions De Strasbourg
$8.79 A group devoted to exploring new sounds, the New Band on DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS continues to foster the ideas of innovation in musical performance. Represented on this recording are the amazing instruments constructed by maverick composer Harry Partch. His inventive harmonic developments in music lead him to create unique microtonal systems that rarely are explored.
The works here are captivating, fresh, and virtuostic from every angle. Using instruments such as the Kithara, Diamond Marimba, and the Zoomoozophone, the New Band creates a unique soundscape of subtle nuances, and abstract voices. Partch's 'Castor and Pollux' is seductive, using soloistic passages, dynamic themes, and lively rhythms. Anne LeBaron's 'Southern Ephemera' uses both Partch, and western instruments beautifully, depicting a fragmented view of songs indigenous to the American south. Brown's 'Archipelago' is textural, and imposes frequent harmonic modulation, as 'Dance of the Seven Veils,' a work by Dean Drummond, founder of New Band, expands the album in uniqueness and timbre, using a larger array of instruments and performance techniques intrinsic to this group of musicians.
Rare, and innovative, the New Band proves that they are up to the challenge of presenting this music with depth and clarity, and heading into the 21st century, the group's insight is ahead of it's time.

Xenakis: Pléïades / Les Percussions De Strasbourg
$7.59 This volume of Sony's György Ligeti Edition contains all of Ligeti's music either written for mechanical reproduction or arranged for mechanical instruments. Dating from his brief flirtation with the Fluxus movement, "Poéme Symphonique," scored for 100 metronomes, produced one of the great scandals of Ligeti's career. As the metronomes wind down, what sounds like a waning rain storm evolves into overlaying rhythmic patterns and finally a single metronome coming to a halt. From the other end of his career come the etudes arranged for player piano. As the Ligeti's Etudes for Piano were originally inspired by the 'Studies for Player Piano' by Conlon Nancarrow, it is appropriate that they should be transferred to a mechanical instrument. In the case of Etude 14, the original is for player piano and moves nearly twice as fast as when performed by the ad lib living pianist.
The barrel organ works occupy a different category, being, for the most part, arrangements of Ligeti's earliest keyboard music. The effect is of a calliope gone mad. Everywhere the charm and whimsy of Ligeti's muse is in evidence. If Ligeti could ever be said to have written light music it is that contained in this volume.
