Collectables' reissue of Oh Lonesome Me contains the original track listing, which boasts hits like "Oh Lonesome Me," "Bad, Bad Day" and "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," and it adds several singles as bonus tracks, which only enhances a collection that was pretty great to begin with. There's some filler on the record, but it contains a number of gems among its lesser-known songs. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Personnel: Don Gibson (vocals, guitar).

Oh Lonesome Me album
$7.79 Recorded between 1961 & 1963. Includes liner notes by Jay Orr and Don Roy.
Recorded between 1960 & 1963. Originally released on Decca (DL7-4854). Includes liner notes by Jay Orr and Don Roy.
When Patsy Cline died in a plane cash in the early '60s she was at the top of her career, a star in both country and pop music. To this day, she is revered as the queen of country music.
Patsy's voice is the epitome of torch singing--emotional, yet distant enough from the flame not to get burned. Her superb voice, with its catches, chokes and soaring notes, changed the course of country and western music, and defined the new direction of female country artists.
Even non-coutry fans appreciate such legendary performances as the seamless, upbeat "Walking After Midnight"; the ultra-torchy "Sweet Dreams"; the swaying ballad "She's Got You"; Willie Nelson's bluesy "Crazy"; the bouncy "Back In Baby's Arms"; the definitive "I Fall To Pieces"...and the hits just go on and on and on.
Ironically, Cline, who considered herself a cowgirl, hated her successful pop tunes. She single-handedly ...

| | Dean Martin Winter Romance CD (1959)
Oh Lonesome Me music CDs
$11.79 A Winter Romance is perhaps best described as a "seasonal" album rather than a Christmas or holiday release, despite the inclusion of such familiar fare as "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." Dean Martin has also included such standards as "The Things We Did Last Summer" and "June in January," as well as some specially written material such as Sammy Cahn and Ken Lane's title song and "It Won't Cool Off." Nevertheless, with its lush strings, well-scrubbed vocal choruses and buoyant mood, this collection has an appropriately festive feel. Martin does a competent job, even having fun here and there when the song allows him to present his take on a similar baritone (Bing Crosby on "White Christmas," Vaughn Monroe on "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!") or when the subject matter strays to something more comfortably suggestive like "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (performed with a female vocal chorus instead of a single female duet partner). All of which is to say that Martin makes the best of the situation without doing anything special with it. (The CD reissue adds one track, "Christmas Blues," recorded ...

Oh Lonesome Me music CDs
$17.05 A 25-track collection of the often scintillating Special Duties' finest 45s, a brief run from 1982's pummeling debut "Violent Society," through a clutch of furiously fun covers (the Adverts' "Gary Gilmore's Eyes," the Lurkers' "Shadow," the Killjoys' "Johnny Won't Get to Heaven"), and onto what remains their best-known number, the harsh denunciation of "Bullshit Crass." In between, the band hit hard and fast every time, with a series of sonic smash and grab raids that seldom take more than three minutes (and many don't even need two) and position Special Duties among the mere handful of punk bands who have not only weathered the decades since their prime in one piece, they have actually continued on the same course with barely a waiver. "I ...
| | Ronny Elliott Poisonville CD (2001)
Oh Lonesome Me songs
$11.49 Poisonville, industry veteran Ronny Elliot's 2001 album, is a fine Americana offering in the spirit of Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Butch Hancock. Lyrically, the songs engage an impressive range of topics, including Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen's ill-fated relationship ("Room 100"), Martin Luther King ("Letter From the Birmingham Jail"), and Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road ("Burn, Burn, Burn"). This is a top-notch amalgam of early rock & roll, blues, and country music bolstered by Elliott's salty backing band, the Nationals. Were he not geographically challenged (hailing from Tampa, ...

| | Iced Earth Something Wicked This Way Comes CD (1998) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition
Oh Lonesome Me album
$11.55 Released in 1998, Something Wicked This Way Comes offers Iced Earth virtually replicating their previous effort, The Dark Saga, but with somewhat less inspired results. "Burning Times," "Stand Alone," and "My Own Savior" are fine slabs of the classic metal/thrash metal combination the band has become known for, but they lack the spark of yesteryear. "1776" is a humdrum instrumental in the Iron Maiden mold, and while "Watching Over Me" and "Consequences" show the band breaking new melodic ground, "Disciples of the Lie" and "Blessed Are You" are two of the few truly memorable songs. Perhaps time limits are the real problem, as the band seems most at home during the extended compositions comprising the "Something Wicked" trilogy which closes the album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
