Collectables reissued Foxy's second and third albums, Get Off and Hot Numbers, on a single disc in 1988. Like most disco bands, Foxy only had a handful of good songs, and those were the ones that were singles -- the rest of their albums consisted of mildly entertaining disco filler. At times, this kind of filler can be fascinating simply because it evokes the era, but it can also be tedious, depending on your frame of mind. Here, it's generally tedious, but it also remains the best Foxy collection on the market, simply because it offers their two best albums on one CD. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont.

$12.35 (MP3 Available for Download) Recorded when he was 63, After Dark finds Hank Crawford excelling by sticking to what he does so well: uncomplicated, blues-drenched, gospel-minded soul-jazz. Warmth and accessibility continued to define the veteran alto saxophonist, who sounds like he's still very much in his prime on everything from "Amazing Grace" to W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues" and the standard ...

| | Real People/Tongue In Chic CD (2003)
Get Off/Hot Numbers music CDs
$10.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Towards the end of the disco era and its subsequent anti-disco movement, Chic had established itself as a major tour de force for themselves and other artists on the R&B circuit. But Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers had already been making strides to distance themselves from the disco era while it was in full swing. And by the time 1980s Real People had hit stores, it was distinctively different; low key in tempo for the majority of the album. Gone were many of the disco anthems that preached excess, getting down on the dancefloor and good times -- in its place lyrics with an emphasis on substance over flash ("Real People" and "Open Up"). Skipping over 1981's Take It Off, this Wounded Bird two-fer concludes with 1982's ...
| | Van Hunt CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Get Off/Hot Numbers songs
$8.99 (MP3 Available for Download) With too much "rhythm" and not enough "blues," contemporary R&B circa 2004 has become overly slick, commercial, and almost emotionless, no matter how hard the vocalist is expressing his love jones. Which is why Van Hunt's debut is so refreshing. Although the Atlanta-based auteur (he wrote or co-wrote all the songs and plays nearly every instrument) clearly has an early-'70s fixation, his heady mix of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Sly Stone, and Prince makes for a thrilling and often moving album. Like Stevie Wonder, another obvious influence, Hunt spices his soul with memorable melodies, overdubbing his own backing vocals and singing these hip-hop-free tunes like he's lived them. Lyrically, he's loved and lost -- often he seems on the verge of both when he croons ...

$7.39 (MP3 Available for Download) After the chart-topping success of HEART LIKE A WHEEL, Linda Ronstadt released PRISONER IN DISGUISE in 1975, an extremely successful follow-up effort which bolstered her standing as one of America's most popular singers. Opting not to fiddle with a formula that was working, Ronstadt delivered another collection of well-crafted, carefully arranged rock, pop and country songs that showed off her talent for covering good tunes and rendering them in a way that allowed the melodies ...
