For his third album, 1999's SHINE EYED MISTER ZEN, folk/blues guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps both expands and contracts his musical vision. Recorded almost solo--Dave Mathis blows harmonica on two tracks--at a club in Portland, Oregon, the new material ... Full Descriptionhere stretches far afield from the comparatively traditional songs on his first two albums, LEAD ME ON and ROLL AWAY THE STONE. The lengthy "House Carpenter" opens the album with some stinging acoustic slide guitar and Phelps' oblique yet evocative lyrics, followed by the pretty folk ballad "River Rat Jimmy." The album continues to alternate between Delta-style country blues like the John Lee Hookerish "Piece by Piece" and folkier songs including a lovely version of Leadbelly's classic "Goodnight Irene" that somehow finds something new in this much-recorded tune. The newfound folk influence is an intriguing new direction for Phelps.
Recorded at The Barley Cap, Portland, Oregon.
Personnel: Kelly Joe Phelps (vocals, guitar); Dave Mathis (harmonica).
Entertainment Weekly (8/13/99, p.77) - "...Phelps serves up heaping portions of gritty warmth and tangy/twangy. He's a self-contained, flesh-and-blood music machine, and an important new voice in the slide guitar world." - Rating: A- Q (9/99, p.112) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...Eerily translucent voice and guitar entwine, mastering the art of subtle embellishment while hopping invisibly between rhythmic chugs and single-note showers." CMJ (7/26/99, p.24) - "...picks his strings attentively to achieve a warped, folksy sound that's as familiar and comforting as the crackle of a home hearth fire..." Mojo (Publisher) (5/01, p.104) - "...Unadorned, masterly, convincing folk-blues..." $13.49 All you have to know about these guys is the fanatical following of "Gumbo Heads" that numbers in thousands. They drive hundreds of miles to get a serving of Big Al and the Heavyweights musical gumbo. You see, Big Al and the Heavyweights is an unconventional original music band that hails from New Orleans, LA. Why Big Al himself is from The Big Easy. That is where he grew up, surrounded by the sounds of New Orleans music - Jazz, Blues, Zydeco, Cajun, Rock, and Swamp Pop. It is these influences that make Heavyweights music so accessible and fun. Big Al and the Heavyweights will be on the road 240+ days this year, and it is this regimen of hard touring for the last six years that has made them one of the most well known, unsigned original bands in any musical form. From the opening bars of "Cajun Roux", it's apparent why fans of Big Al & the Heavyweights are fondly referred to as "Gumbo Heads". The band delivers a healthy serving of downhome, Cajun flavored blues. "Live Crawfish" is remarkably crisp; the sound of this diamond in the rough band doesn't get lost in the mix. ~ Blues Revue Big Al & the Heavyweights are a bad ass blues band... serving up over 70 minutes of superior rock stompin blues, the band is rock solid. This is a great party cd- play it loud at your next crawfish throwdown. ~ OffBEATA funky gumbo of great electric blues with a dash of Cajun spice... the Heavyweights get you moving one way or another- from slow and mean to hot and hoppin'.
