From the perplexing Germanic interlude of the opener, "Didja Get Any Onya?" to the complex xylophone changes of "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue," Zappa combines avant garde music, jazz, R&B, novelty elements, and plenty of flippant rock attitude. Interestingly, there are some straight-up rock tracks too, such as the interpretation of Little Richard's "Directly From My Heart To You," and the guitar-led attack of "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," balancing highbrow conceptualism with unpretentious directness in Zappa's inimitable fashion.
After getting over the colorful, disconcerting Neon Parks album cover illustration on WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH, the listener is faced with following the whiplash-inducing, genre-jumping gymnastics inside. A mix of live tracks with studio cuts made with the original Mothers of Invention, WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH is one of Frank Zappa's most eclectic, varied, and experimental early releases.
Personnel: Frank Zappa, Lowell George (vocals, guitar); Don "Sugarcane" Harris (vocals, electric violin); Roy Estrada (vocals, bass instrument); Ray Collins (vocals); Ian Underwood (alto saxophone); Bunk Gardner (tenor saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn); Motorhead Sherwood (baritone saxophone); Don Preston (piano, organ); Jimmy Carl Black, Art Tripp (drums).
Rolling Stone (10/1/70, p.42) - "...This random collection...finds the group peerless in the field of amalgamating satire, musical adventuresomeness, and flash..." Entertainment Weekly (12/17/93, p.36) - "...the original Mothers' last gasp, WEASELS contains some of Zappa's looniest work in a free jazz vein..." Q (8/95, pp.150-151) - 5 Stars - Indispensable - "...as diverse and dynamic as any Mothers' album. Not a dull moment..." $10.09 HOT RATS was digitally remixed in 1987. "The Gumbo Variations" has been extended an extra 4 minutes from the original LP version. All of the tracks have been remixed, and in some cases sound quite different.

| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Burnt Weeny Sandwich CD (1970) Remastered
Weasels Ripped My Flesh songs
$7.25 The Mothers Of Invention includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, organ); Sugar Cane Harris (violin); Ian Underwood, Don Preston (piano).
BURNT WEENY SANDWICH would be Frank Zappa's last album released in the Sixties (December of 1969, to be exact). Having just split up the original Mothers of Invention line-up, Zappa decided to sift through tapes of unused tracks by the band, which ultimately comprised BURNT WEENY SANDWICH (another compilation of outtakes, WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH, would be issued one year later). The majority of the album is instrumental, and contains both live and studio material. Although the songs didn't surface the first time around, these aren't throwaways--many worthwhile Zappa cuts reside here.
The only compositions to contain vocals are the album's opener, "WPLJ," and closer, "Valarie." Both are essentially obscure doo-wop covers (Zappa covered doo-wop songs throughout his career), and are expertly performed. Symphonic music is touched upon with two ...
| | Frank Zappa Chunga's Revenge CD (1970) Remastered
Weasels Ripped My Flesh album
$7.25 This 1970 release finds Zappa and band at the apex of their improvisational powers. CHUNGA'S REVENGE largely eschews both high concept and satire in order to focus on the considerable jamming expertise of Zappa and his cohorts. In its original LP form, the album was divided into two discrete halves. The first side consists of extended, largely instrumental pieces where Zappa and his musicians stretch out and show off their improv chops over relatively simple, often blues-based structures. The keyboard-based instrumental interlude "Twenty Small Cigars" provides an interesting semi-classical change of pace.
Side two contains shorter, vocal-oriented numbers, with harmonies that draw on the doo-wop influence of Zappa's youth (a recurrent element in his work). Slightly schizophrenic though it may be, CHUNGA'S REVENGE is something of a showcase for the members of Zappa's group, displaying their vocal and instrumental interaction to fine effect.
Japanese version featuring a limited LP ...
| | Frank Zappa Grand Wazoo CD (1973) Remastered
Weasels Ripped My Flesh CD music
$7.25 This album appeared within the same year as WAKA/JAWAKA and continued Zappa's exploration of the possibilities for composing and arranging material for a big band with a hefty brass and reed section. Both albums were produced during the period in which he was recuperating from injuries sustained when he was thrown from the stage during a London concert the year before. THE GRAND WAZOO still sounds like a fresh and equal marriage of Zappa's already developed and apparent musical sensibilities with large ensemble jazz writing. The couple vocal numbers utilize the singing as another melodic line, ...
