| | Carey Bell Deep Down CD Carey Bell Discography of CDs
Blues harmonica master Carey Bell was pushing 60 when he began recording for the Alligator label, with decades of great albums behind him, but DEEP DOWN nevertheless marked a late, great phase in Bell's career. With a sharp band that includes ... Full Descriptionhis son Lurrie on guitar and Lucky Peterson on piano, Bell digs deep into the classic Chicago blues sound with both his voice and his harp, turning out a brace of tunes that feel much more like from-the-gut blues battle cries than perfunctory readings.
Recorded at Streeterville Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Includes liner notes by Scott Dirks.
Personnel: Carey Bell (vocals, harmonica); Carl Weathersby, Lurrie Bell (guitar); Lucky Peterson (piano); Johnny B. Gayden (bass); Ray "Killer" Allison (drums).

JazzTimes (7-8/95, p.128) - "...Bell and company lay down a solid set of grooves..." Option (7-8/95, p.92) - "...Bell's harp solos are huge, brawling things, louder than a Mack truck, but still expressive. His style is soaked in decades of Chicago electric blues, full of life on the road and classic blues themes..." Jazziz (10/95, p.101) - "...At 59, Carey Bell drives his swinging, Chicago-based sextet with full-throttle ferocity and a gritty voice to match his big, distorted harp sound....he makes his command of the instrument obvious. DEEP is a dose of classic...R&B medicine. Sing Out! (8-10/95, p.140) - "...shows the veteran blues man at the peak of his powers musically...he's in complete control...performances you won't easily forget..." Deep Down album
$6.39 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the ...
| | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
Deep Down CD music
$9.89 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Deep Down music CDs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Deep Down songs
$12.05 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA ...

| | Eric Clapton Sessions For Robert J CDs (2004) Comes with a bonus DVD featuring live performances
Deep Down CD music
$16.59 During the filming of tour rehearsals that followed the release of Eric Clapton's acclaimed ME AND MR. JOHNSON, bassist Nathan East jokingly noted that many of the band's performances were "better than on the album." Clapton's longtime low-ender may have been right, as the resultant SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J provides the best of both worlds--the freshness of live interaction and the sound quality of a studio album.
The differences between the two discs are sometimes striking, but often subtle. Clapton's vocals on "Milkcow's Calf Blues" are more forceful, Billy Preston's organ stabs on "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" just that much funkier. Of course, SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J (which comes paired with a lengthy documentary DVD featuring the practice sessions and interview footage) also includes several Robert Johnson songs not recorded for the ME AND MR. JOHNSON album. ...
