| | Art Blakey Night At Birdland Vol. 1 CD (1954) Remastered
Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
$7.99 Recorded live at Birdland, New York, New York on February 21, 1954. Originally released on Bluenote (1521). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
When Pee-Wee Marquette, emcee of Birdland, introduces Art Blakey and his quintet, the audience in attendance erupts in enthusiastic applause. Rightly so; this is a powerful group in full stride. A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND VOL. ONE captures Blakey's pre-Messengers quintet on an evening in February 1954 with legendary trumpeter Clifford Brown and alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson holding down the front line. Longtime partners Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, as well as talented bassist Curley Russell, propel the relentless rhythm section.
The results of that eventful night are now preserved so that we may become patrons of the once legendary nightspot. The fiery mambo "Split Kick" opens the set showcasing Blakey's assertive drumming and the fine blowing of Brown and Donaldson. Silver's bebop-style "Quicksilver" also provides a stunning vehicle for the group's lightning-quick dexterity. Turning the tide, the slow and sultry "Blues" is a totally ...

| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve And Other Stories CD (1996)
Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so ...

| | Roger Whittaker Greatest Hits CD (1994)
Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
$7.49 Roger Whittaker's overall career is under-represented by a casual glance at his list of hit singles -- only seven in total, all of which were included on the Now and Then: Greatest Hits 1964-2004 compilation (although his hits actually came to an end in 1986, and his only forays into the album charts have been with similar compilations since then). However, Whittaker's hits do stand out, and one was always under the impression that he achieved more -- but seven hits it was, and only three of those reached the Top Ten. He became famous for telling stories and painting portraits with his music, and there was no better example than his biggest success, "The Last Farewell," which surprisingly was placed near the end of this album -- and was also a re-recording, with the power and emotion of the original wiped away. Also included was his first European success, "Mexican Whistler," which first alerted the public to his skills at whistling as well as singing, a skill used to great effect on his final hit, "The Skye Boat Song," a duet with Des O'Connor from Christmas 1986. Unfortunately, for all the good work he put in with his own songs, the album was spoiled by some cover versions that he perhaps should never have attempted, the worst being "If I Were a Rich Man" from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, cut down to less than three minutes and devoid of the most poignant parts of the song and also any emotional involvement. There have been many compilations of his work up to this point, but Now and Then added nothing to previous best-ofs that can be picked up at budget prices. ~ Sharon Mawer
