Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
$11.49 Reissued several times in various forms since its initial 1987 release, Spacemen 3's second album is a remarkable departure from the band's 1986 debut, SOUND OF CONFUSION. Reduced to a trio (guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving THE PERFECT PRESCRIPTION a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements. Highlights include one of Spacemen 3's finest cover versions, an extremely long, beautifully lush, violin-accented meditation on the Red Krayola's classic "Transparent Radiation," as well as the foreboding "Take Me to the Other Side." The album title introduces Pierce's pharmaceutical fixation, further developed in later Spacemen ...
| | Casolla Puccini: Turandot At The Forbidden City / Mehta, Et Al CDs (1998)
Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
$24.79 This program is also available on VHS (RCA Victor Red Seal 60916) and on DVD (RCA Victor Red Seal 60917).
The video version of this unique September 1998 production reveals much of the merit of staging Puccini's last opera--a tale of an icy Chinese princess ultimately overcome by love--in an historically suitable setting, a courtyard surrounded by ancient halls, palaces, and gardens in Beijing. There's actually little tangible effect of the setting on the sound of the recording, which stands on the considerable merits of its soloists and conductor Zubin Mehta's apparent glory in the opera's majesty.
Sergej Larin brings a virile, burnished edge to the voice of the so-called Unknown Prince who sues for the Princess's hand at the risk of his life, and his "Nessun dorma" is bright enough to light up the sleepless night of Act III. Giovanna Casolla wonderfully suggests the vulnerable side of Turandot as well as her domineering bitterness, and both she and Larin are credibly uplifted by the sensuous love themes near the opera's end. Barbara Frittoli is vibrant and sweet as the slave girl Liů. José Fardilha, Francesco Piccoli, and Carlo Allemano give a spirited reading of Turandot's reluctant henchmen, a nod to the story's commedia dell'arte origins and yet an important part of this opera's thoroughly contemporary psychological appeal.

| | Art Blakey Night At Birdland Vol. 1 CD (1954) Remastered
Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
$9.19 Recorded live at Birdland, New York, New York on February 21, 1954. Originally released on Bluenote (1521). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
When Pee-Wee Marquette, emcee of Birdland, introduces Art Blakey and his quintet, the audience in attendance erupts in enthusiastic applause. Rightly so; this is a powerful group in full stride. A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND VOL. ONE captures Blakey's pre-Messengers quintet on an evening in February 1954 with legendary trumpeter Clifford Brown and alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson holding down the front line. Longtime partners Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, as well as talented bassist Curley Russell, propel the relentless rhythm section.
The results of that eventful night are now preserved so that we may become patrons of the once legendary nightspot. The fiery mambo "Split Kick" opens the set showcasing Blakey's assertive drumming and the fine blowing of Brown and Donaldson. Silver's bebop-style "Quicksilver" also provides a stunning vehicle for the group's lightning-quick dexterity. Turning the tide, the slow and sultry "Blues" is a totally improvised jam that provides some down-and-dirty solos by the horns and piano. Of course, the highlight of the set is Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia," a piece that would become a Messengers favorite. Finally, Silver's up-tempo "Mayreh" ...

Verdi: Requiem / Hickox, Crider, Hatziano, Sade, Lloyd
