| | Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem /Klemperer, Schwarzkopf, Et Al CD (1999)
Dutilleux: L'Arbre De Songes, Etc / Tortelier, Charlier
$9.55 The Piano Concerto in D minor which premiered in 1859 was universally detested, so Johannes Brahms dedicated his attention to composing extended chamber works. Eventually he reworked an abandoned slow movement of the concerto into a choral setting of the chorale "Denn alles Fleisch es ist wie Gras." This became a cantata, which in time was extended to six movements with solos for soprano and baritone called 'A German Requiem.' The deaths of his mother and his mentor, Robert Schumann, made Brahms contemplate mortality. The composer denied that the Requiem was specifically for Schumann, but rather for "the whole of humanity." 'A German Requiem' does not move audiences with fire and brimstone but instead touches the heart with its serenity.
This recording is one of a series called "Great Recordings of the Century" and it lives up to its name. Soprano Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau were at the peak of their form when this recording was made and make memorable solo contributions. The Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus are under the direction of one of the century's greatest conductors, Otto Klemperer. Klemperer paces things superbly, with devastating impact in the magnificent sarabande of the second movement.

Dutilleux: L'Arbre De Songes, Etc / Tortelier, Charlier
$11.69 Now one wonders, if Mozart makes you more relaxed, will more Mozart make you even more relaxed or equally relaxed for a longer period of time? The folks at Decca add fuel to the debate with this more-than-generous collection of adagios, which clocks in at just a shade under two and a half hours. All the favorites are here, the B-flat Serenade for Winds, the 'Elvira Madigan' Piano Concerto, the Concerto for Flute and Harp and much more, but the ever-present question is who's playing, and the answers should give satisfaction.
The star of this show is Vladimir Ashkenazy, whose excellent piano concerto recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra are represented with four selections, while András Schiff is heard in the three solo sonata movements. Other notable soloists include violinist Joshua Bell, clarinetists Jack Brymer and Gervaise de Peyer and horn player Barry Tuckwell, accompanied by the likes of the English Chamber Orchestra, London Symphony and Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. So here's an opportunity to take the phone off the hook for the afternoon and bliss out.

| | Shostakovich: Piano Concertos No 1 & 2, Etc /Bronfman, Et Al CD (1999)
Dutilleux: L'Arbre De Songes, Etc / Tortelier, Charlier
$8.99 These two piano concertos find Dmitri Shostakovich in a playful mood, but playful in the way that Mahler is playful. It is the latter composer's kaleidoscopic canvases that come to mind when listening to Shostakovich's sonic tableaux. They paint both the vaudevillian, as in the end of the first movement of the Concerto No. 1, and the poignant, as in the second movement of the Concerto No. 2, which also sounds like an homage to the second movement of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2.
Possessing all of the requisite musical and temperamental qualities to bring this music to life, Russian-born pianist Yefim Bronfman offers up artistically and technically dazzling performances that sometimes alarm the listener with their heart-pounding immediacy. With unmannered, unassailably confident playing, Bronfman locates the music's humor, tenderness, and occasional mania, resulting in performances that convince without seeming to try.
