(1 Customer Review)
No, HIGH NOTES isn't a reference to drug use. That's an airplane on the album cover-Williams' tour jet, in fact-and "High and Pressurized" is about the convenience of air travel. Elsewhere, it's mostly rowdy business as usual.
Williams does a spirited two-stepping cover of his dad's "Honky-Tonkin'," invokes the spirit of Charlie Daniels in "The South's Gonna Rattle Again," and goes mariachi on "Ain't Makin' No Headlines (Here Without You)." The standout track, however, is the unlikely, slowed-down cover of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood." It shouldn't work, but it does, in a weirdly funereal way. High Notes album
$7.25 ONE NIGHT STANDS is Bocephus in 1977, thus a lot less rowdy than you might expect. At the time, Nashville was in the throes of one of its cyclical flirtations with crossover appeal. Consequently, there's a lot of stuff here that, as they say, doth protest the smell of cow manure too much.
The arrangements are laden with shimmering electric pianos and female choruses, and some of the songs seem to have no connection with country music as anyone ...
| | Hank Williams, Jr New South: Original Classic Hits Vol. 2 CDs (1995)
High Notes CD music
$5.85 1977's THE NEW SOUTH was produced by Hank Williams Jr's spiritual cousin Waylon Jennings. It's no surprise, then, that it sounds very much like one of Jennings' albums of the period. Much of THE NEW SOUTH has an acoustic, ...
| | Hank Williams, Jr Rowdy: Original Classic Hits Vol. 6 CD (1981)
High Notes music CDs
$5.95 Title notwithstanding, ROWDY is a fairly downbeat album. There's far less of Hank Williams Jr.'s good ole' boy mythologizing here than you might expect. In fact, most of the songs find Williams either a bit depressed or with weightier issues than ...
| | Hank Williams, Jr Pressure Is On: Original Classic Hits Vol. 7 CDs (1981)
High Notes songs
$5.99 THE PRESSURE IS ON is one of Hank Williams Jr.'s best '80s albums. The regretful anthem "All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down" is almost a country version of Warren Zevon's "Detox Mansion."
On "The Coalition to Ban Coalitions," Williams does an excellent Daffy Duck imitation and comes to terms with our highly litigious society. "Some want to get rid of Fender guitars," he complains. There's also Williams Sr.'s "I Don't Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes)," done as a gorgeous duet with George Jones, and--reinforcing the family theme--the very funny "Ballad of Hank," written and co-sung by his father's old bandmate Don Helms.
This is Volume 7 of Curb's Bocephus series.

| | Hank Williams, Jr Strong Stuff: Original Classic Hits Vol. 9 CD (1983)
High Notes album
$5.85 His Rowdiness is in fine form on STRONG STUFF, an album that tilts a little more heavily to the Southern rock side of Williams' musical personality. The inclusion of two Z.Z. Top covers (the John Lee Hooker-ish "La Grange" and "Blue Jean Blues" gives ...
| | Hank Williams, Jr Major Moves CD (1984) Original Classic Hits 11
High Notes CD music
$7.25 MAJOR MOVES is one of Hank Williams, Jr.'s rowdiest, and most proudly politically incorrect albums. The centerpiece is "The Blues Medley," a montage of three Lightning Hopkins classics featuring guest performances by Ray Charles on piano, John Lee Hooker on vocals, and the Allman Brothers' Dickie Betts on slide guitar.
Other highlights include "Attitude Adjustment," in which Hank regales listeners with stories about taking out a hated brother-in-law with a tire iron, and hitting his girlfriend in the head. "Mr. Lincoln" is a conversation with the Great Emancipator, inspired by headlines in the Nashville newspapers, in which Hank assures us that Honest Abe would have been opposed to gun control, while "Video Blues," finds Hank taken aback by then-new VCR technology and XXX-rated movies.
This is part of Curb's Bocephus series.

High Notes album
$26.49 1999 release features two bonus tracks "Masses Against the Classes" and "So Why So Sad."
One of the continuing mysteries of rock & roll is how the Manic Street Preachers can continue to be hailed as demi-gods in their native UK but get relegated to permanent cult status in America. While that situation is unlikely to change, KNOW YOUR ENEMY is probably as close as the band has come to album with potential US appeal. It's not that the band's revolutionary ideology has softened, but they've varied their sonic palette a bit.
The keyboards and harmonies adorning the melodic pop of "So Why So Sad" suggest that the Preachers have been listening to the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B." The aptly titled "Miss Europa Disco Dancer" could be a long-lost China Crisis, with its ironic Brit-funk feel. A mix of acoustic guitars and subtle keyboards offset the raw guitar attack on many cuts, though "My Guernica" is a bold, blazing return to form, full of charging, trashy drums and driving guitars. On "Let Robeson Sing," a heartfelt tribute to legendary American vocalist/activist Paul Robeson, singer James Dean Bradfield asks "Can anyone write a protest song?" For the Manic Street Preachers, the answer is a resounding "yes."
Britain's best band returns after the triumph of their '...Truth' LP which made them the rock darlings of the UK. The band go against the grain with the release of 2 singles at once with 'So Why So Sad' & ' Found That Soul'. Also features the track 'Baby Elian', written about the recent incidents involving a ...
