| | Steve Goodman Live Wire CD Steve Goodman Discography of CDs
Recorded during a circa 1980 tour on which Goodman was accompanied by a fine four-piece band and two background singers, Live Wire nicely overcomes a hazard often resulting from such circumstances: While the band is clearly there, they're mixed low enough most of the way through that they don't interfere with Goodman's own voice and guitar. And in some cases, like Jim Rothermel's sax solo on a magnificent reading of "You're the Girl I Love" and a long workout on "What Have You Done for Me Lately," the presence of additional musicians adds a lot. The repertoire will be familiar to most Goodman fans, even casual ones, with its blend of his own intelligent (and often witty) compositions, a couple of tunes by fellow Chicagoan Michael Smith, and a few off-the-wall oldies. He takes "City of New Orleans" at a faster clip (and closer melodically to Arlo Guthrie's version) than you might expect; "Hand It to You" rocks, with Goodman on electric guitar and the whole band in high gear; a breakneck It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" featuring fingerbusting fretwork; and a segue from the tender "&Old Smoothies" to country singer Leroy VanDyke's tongue-twisting 1957 hit "Auctioneer." The album package includes complete lyrics and a brief note by Goodman's co-manager, Al Bunetta. ~ Todd Everett

Live Wire album
$12.05 Steve Goodman reached the charts with his first two albums for Asylum Records, Jessie's Jig & Other Favorites (1975) and Words We Can Dance To (1976), and that may have convinced the label to spend more money on his next LP (money intended to be recoupable against royalties should the album take off, of course), because the sessions for Say It in Private appear to have been quite elaborate. For the first time since his second album, Somebody Else's Troubles (1973), Goodman had a real producer (i.e., somebody who produced records for a living), Joel Dorn, and among the six dozen singers and players who contributed to the sessions were plenty of arrangers and string players. Nevertheless, Say It in Private ended up being a fairly typical Steve Goodman album. In a sense, the cover art told the story. It featured ...

Live Wire album
$11.29 Jack Casady first came to fame as an original member of the Jefferson Airplane and later, Hot Tuna. The first solo album (at age 59) from this well-traveled and prolific bassist, Dream Factor, is a mixed affair. Unlike most rock bass-playing frontmen, Casady does not sing, so his contributions to his debut are relegated to the occasional bass solo, and as co-writer of nearly all the tracks. His bass playing is more innovative ...

| | Darrell Scott Live In NC CD (2005)
Live Wire music CDs
$13.85 Darrell Scott's new "Live in NC" recalls the record -buyer's rush I felt mail-ordering a couple of limited edition CDs some years ago from Richard Thompson's website. They captured the great singer/songwriter guitarist performing electrically and acoustically with bassist Danny Thompson (no relation). The discs did a fine job conveying how these two men command a stage like a couple of ancient English monarchs (wise and benevolent ones, of course) reincarnated as stringed instrument musicians. Could the parallels be any clearer? "Live in NC" pairs Scott, a stateside wizard of guitar and song, with Danny's bass and the syncopated, deeply grooved timekeeping of drummer Kenny Malone. Like Richard Thompson, Scott writes beautifully, deeply informed by his native folk culture and musical druids. He's a powerhouse singer, and whether by himself or, as here, with gifted collaborators, he can take both acoustic and electric guitar to ...
