| | D'Gary Malagasy Guitar/Music From Madagascar CD D'Gary Discography of CDs
It's always hard to separate out the influences on a Malagasy recording - I was sure D'Gary's guitar would resemble traditional valiha playing, instead it's a complex mixture of East African traditional and European influences (but no Joseph Spence, despite the blurb). At times he sounds like Ali Farka Toure without the bluesy overtones (though perhaps not as delicate) - long, fluid runs which reminded me of Portuguese fado, at other times he strums in a way that recalls the South African Citaumvano! Actually, this diversity is not surprising when you consider D'Gary's island origins . ~ Carl Hoyt

Option (5-6/93, p.99) - "...[MALAGASY GUITAR] is essential for anyone with even a remote interest in finger-picked acoustic guitar....The sum is both serene and earthy, naive and sophisticated, as if D'Gary had learned from a guitar master and then disappeared to that remote island to create a new language for the instrument..." | | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Malagasy Guitar/Music From Madagascar
$14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's ...
| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Malagasy Guitar/Music From Madagascar
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which ...
| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Malagasy Guitar/Music From Madagascar
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano ...

| | George Strait Pure Country CD (1992) Original Soundtrack; SDTK
Malagasy Guitar/Music From Madagascar
$10.39 George Strait is one of the leading proponents of a traditional country music that is styled with Texas swing, delivering his music with a rich, no frills voice and a straight-ahead delivery.
PURE COUNTRY is the soundtrack to Strait's film debut, offering a variety of swinging shuffles, traditional honky tonk, weepy ballads and country rockers. He wears his influences proudly, and having been doing it so well for so long, he has, in turn, become a major influence on the next generation of new traditionalists. One can clearly hear Merle Haggard, Bob Wills and George Jones in his music; but give a listen to new guys like Clay Walker, and you'll hear a distinctive George Strait influence.
Riding a flat-bed of fiddle, pedal steel and genuinely heartfelt vocals, Strait takes the listener on a tour of the country singer's world. On the uptempo "Heartland," George explains that to "sing a song about the heartland" is to "sing a song about my life." The album's hit, "I Cross My Heart," is a strong love ballad co-written by one of Nashville's best current songwriters, Eric Kaz. A gentle fiddle leads the listener into the cry-in-your-beer classic "When Did You Stop Loving Me," and before long the fiddle is weeping alongside George. ...
