Difficult to categorize, Crossing the Waters combines subtleties of Celtic and early music with classical undertones and contemporary song structures. Some might call such an aggregate new age, but unlike much of what either rightly or wrongly passes as new age, this music has a pulse and possesses valid melodies which one can actually recall. Musically, there's a lot going on here. The classically trained Steve Schuch plays violin and guitar and composed ten of the 12 pieces on this album. The Night Heron Consort includes the skillful David Surette on guitar and bouzouki and Kent Allyn on fretless bass. The euphonious "Swallows Flight/Black Flies Delight" (in which the entire consort jubilantly performs) and the mournful "Phantom Gypsy" (featuring only Schuch's bluesy violin) are indicative of the extremes and depths found on this recording.
