This is all really good stuff, and acoustic guitarist Simpson has made a nice selection of pieces to perform on this album -- songs and laments from England and Ireland. To be sure, Simpson performs very well, as does Erio Aceto, here heard playing electric violin and mandolin. The problem, is that out of twelve classic songs, not a one sticks to the ribs of the mind, even after playing the disc numerous times. There is an overwhelming sense of some element missing, and perhaps it's passion. All these pieces are performed with a professional, perfect blandness that belies their nature and origin. In aiming for such a clean rendition, Simpson seems to have lost connection with their spirit, rendering numbers such as "The Greenfields of America" and "McCrimmon's Lament" to the status of background music. Overall, it's listenable enough, and pleasantly enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable. As with the other albums in the Guitar Artistry series. this one comes with a tablature book for budding guitarists. ~ Steven McDonald Martin Simpson Leaves Of Life Songs Leaves Of Life Review

A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE is an album of Martin Simpson's instrumental arrangements of classic American Gospel songs. Martin Simpson is simply one of the most talented folk-rooted acoustic guitar players in the world, and he has plenty of opportunities to demonstrate his sensitive musicianship on A Closer Walk With Thee, a collection of traditional gospel tunes. On many of the tracks, Simpson has overdubbed baritone guitars, mandolas, and mandolins over his stunningly beautiful acoustic arrangements. Additionally, he has enlisted other musicians to supply, at times, trumpet, flugelhorn, ...

Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's follow-up to their acclaimed 1998 debut, Tanglewood Tree is a truly potent mix of outstanding country harmonies, exemplary musicianship, and complex narratives. The compositions here provide ample evidence of Carter's much deserved reputation in folk circles as one of the most talented singer/songwriters, as he colors an amazingly rich rural landscape, mixing elements of Native American mysticism with tales of the paradoxes of love and the musings of people in transition, always treating his characters with an honest, understated dignity. Featuring a much fuller sound than their previous record When I Go, ...
