SLIDE RULE finds Douglas returning to a more bluegrass-based acoustic sound after his "new acoustic" adventures of the '80s. On those MCA Masters Series records, he messed around with digital processing and drums--with mixed results. With SLIDE RULE, Douglas began inviting guest singers in--a successful practice he has continued with equally fine results on the more recent RESTLESS ON THE FARM. He's backed by a killer band, featuring Scott Nygaard, Mark Schatz, and Stuart Duncan, and Alison Krauss' vocal turn is particularly winsome. Douglas also offers up three solo pieces, two of them on Weissenborn guitar. If this album rings your chimes, be sure to check out SKIP HOP AND WOBBLE, probably Douglas' finest collaborative and compositional work to date.
Another solo record from the man Molly O'Brien once referred to as "our Jerry." Like late Grateful Dead ringmaster Jerry Garcia, Douglas has legions of fans hanging on every note, festivarians and acolytes for whom the most-recorded Dobro player on the planet can do no wrong. Impressively, Douglas does not coast on this status but tries his damnedest to make a great record every time he collects his thoughts in the form of a solo outing.
Personnel includes: Jerry Douglas, Tim O'Brien.

| | Jerry Douglas Restless On The Farm CD (1998)
Slide Rule
$12.19 "The Ride" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
Like Bela Fleck and Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas is a grassroots instrumentalist of undeniable prowess. A master of the dobro and lap steel guitar, Douglas is one of the most in-demand session musicians in Nashville. RESTLESS ON THE FARM is a testament to his musical virtuosity. Guest stars abound, with Steve Earle, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck and Maura O'Connell contributing to many of the 11 tracks. Throughout the conglomeration of styles on this album, however, the focus is on Douglas' distinctive glissando and tasty steel picking.
From the very traditional bluegrass opening of "Things In Life," the musical bar is set at a high mark. Stylistically, however, things begin to change rather quickly. The dark, diminished sound of "Turkish Taffee" brings ...
| | Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On A Gravel Road CD (1998)
Slide Rule
$11.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center again.
Produced largely by Steve Earle, CAR WHEELS is immersed in that late-'90s alt-country sound, full of slide guitar, accordion, dobro and other Americana touches. It's a tribute to Williams's unique artistic vision that she distinguishes herself from the No ...
| | Buddy Miller Universal United House Of Prayer CD (2004) Digipak
Slide Rule
$10.95 Alt-country polymath Buddy Miller's UNIVERSAL UNITED HOUSE OF PRAYER was touted as his "gospel album," but that's only true in the loosest sense. While the content of all the songs is spiritual in nature (some less overtly than others), fans of what normally falls under the gospel umbrella might be in unfamiliar territory. The material comes from a wide variety of sources, from Bob Dylan (his ...
