This CD features percussionist Ray Mantilla's the Jazz Tribe, a sextet with altoist Bobby Watson, trumpeter Jack Walrath, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Curtis Lundy, and drummer Victor Lewis. Mantilla's percussion infuses the largely straight-ahead music (three originals by Mantilla, two by Watson, and one apiece from the other four players, plus Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait") with Latin rhythms. The music swings and Watson in particular is in exciting form for the advanced hard bop outing. ~ Scott Yanow
