Right in step with their California ska-pop brothers Sugar Ray and Sublime comes San Diego's Buck-O-Nine. After more than five years of playing clubs, Buck-O-Nine attracted a loyal following with their raucous combination of ska, reggae and a touch of The Clash. While others in their genre, such as the aforementioned California bands, as well as Boston's Mighty Mighty Bosstones, have gone on to major success, Buck-O-Nine remains something of an insider phenomenon with a strong, cult following.
However, LIBIDO, packed with crunching, over-driven guitars and stabbing horn lines, makes a strong case for Buck-O-Nine deserving a little more attention. From the energetic, radio-ready opening track, "Tell It Like It Was" to the acoustic guitar-driven "Swimming in Sand," and the Specials homage "All Along," Buck-O-Nine is at the top of the '90s ska/punk/pop pack.

Libido album
$6.65 The debut album by San Diego ska-punks Buck-O-Nine garnered instant comparison to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and for good reason; although singer Jon Pebsworth had infinitely more dulcet tones than the gravel-voiced Dicky Barrett, the band's revved-up reiteration of the Two Tone sound was otherwise distinctly similar. (If anything, the snotty "Irish Drinking Song" ...

Libido CD music
$13.69 Imagine that Joe Jackson had a younger brother who grew up listening to the punk and ska music of the late '70s (i.e., the Clash, the Specials), moved to California during the skate punk scene, and formed a band with six of his slacker friends, and you've got a good mental picture of the music on Twenty-Eight Teeth. Buck-O-Nine has the three-minute, get-in-get-out punk/pop aesthetic down to a science, which makes you wonder why they haven't hit it big by now. Surely one well-placed "buzzworthy" clip could have put these guys on the map, except that ska-punk has always been treated as a novelty in this country, and the door ...

$15.75 The soundtrack to the 2008 Pixar animated film WALL*E consists primarily of composer Thomas Newman's orchestral score. As with his music for FINDING NEMO, Newman mixes grand symphonic passages (the sweeping "2815 A.D.") with lighter chamber pieces (the easy-going "Bubble Wrap"), resulting in an emotionally engaging album that can stand on its own merits. The collection also includes "Down to Earth," an atmospheric pop tune by Newman and Peter Gabriel.
