The main points of grief with Wobble's debut album are his vocals -- they're awful, most resembling a liquored up Colin Newman. Another criticism is that a couple of his syrupy basslines here are nicked from his PiL work; "Not Another" and "Blueberry Hill"'s lines are straight off Metal Box, so it's no small wonder why John Lydon quickly sacked him from the band. Aside from these gripes, it remains a pretty strong record. The Legend Lives On's finer moments often occur when Wobble's mouth is shut, or when he chants rather than sings. "Today Is the First Day of The..." and "Tales From Outer Space" feature nice and queasy synth effects and ample basslines. The record is largely guitar free, submerged in white reggae. Virgin's CD reissue adds seven bonus tracks, including a horn-laden remix of "Today Is the First Day" and the completely laughable and likely offensive "Dreadlock Don't Deal in Wedlock." ~ Andy Kellman

Nobody who likes music could fail to be emotionally moved by this album, and not just because Marley is no longer with us. It was a special live treat before he died. The great thing about this record is the feeling that this is what it was like every night, unlike other live recordings which capture one or two gigs of a tour. Marley was extra special and a giant of popular music. Wallow in this vital record and listen to a man who had something to say and yet had fun while he said it. Most of the tracks you would want to be on the record are here, including the definitive version of 'No Woman No Cry' and a funky 'Lively Up Yourself'.
As the title implies, this is indeed Bob Marley & the Wailers captured in performance at the Lyceum Ballroom in London during the final U.K. leg of the Natty Dread tour. Ska-lternative was part of WestSide Records' raid on the vaults of Top Deck Records, whose library of 1960s sessions yielded a good dozen CDs worth of rarities -- indeed, officially this disc is also designated "Top Sounds From Top Deck, Vol. 6." It includes alternate takes of tracks from Roland Alphonso ("Because of You"), the Deacons ("Man Alone"), Johnny Moore ("Yogi Man"), Lyn Taitt ("Ska-Ta-Shot"), and the Angelic Brothers ("My Sunshine"). There are points of key interest from the kick-off, a Roland Alphonso instrumental romp through Ray Bryant's 1963 Sue Records side "Shake a Lady," titled "VC10" -- the latter was also among the relative handful ofTop Deck 45s to see release in England (where it appeared on the Doctor Bird label).
